Some moments in the history of video games leave their mark on us. The ending of Bioshock: Infinite. The first hours of The Last of Us Part 2. More recently, there was the battle for Malevelon Creek in Helldivers 2. It’s hard to believe that a game at the beginning of 2024 already gave PTSD to many gamers. And it’s more than justified. After fighting the gentle and friendly Terminid, no one expected the Automatons’ madness. To this day, something that scares me more than the queue to enter Helldivers 2 is the memories left by this planet full of laser beams, killing machines, and screams of my compatriots.
The Battle for Malevelon Creek Will Go Down as the Most Famous Event in Helldivers 2
Perhaps you, like me, felt the call of democracy to join in the liberation for Malevelon Creek in Helldivers 2. Initially, all efforts were on the front lines against the Terminid, but we got arrogant. The Automaton launched a massacre against this planet, and we were called to the fight. At first, no one knew what to expect, but we jumped in. We landed clutching the Super Earth flag and our stratagems, thinking it was another simple fight. It wasn’t. The carnage, the explosions, the blasters; we lost too many. But we kept going. With songs by Creedence Clearwater Revival in the background, we endured. And today, Mavelon Creek’s defense is one of the most infamous events of the game.
For those who don’t know, Helldivers 2 has an ever-evolving campaign. Thanks to the developers, everything can change in real time. Sometimes, they give us new stratagems or throw fog on a planet. But one of the most traumatizing yet entertaining things was Malevelon Creek. The Global Order consists of defending planets being attacked by robots, and this is one of them. But frankly, no one expected the change in difficulty. It’s so much so that many call it “Robot Vietnam” because of the chaos that ensues. You are shrouded in fog where you don’t know where the enemies are shooting at you.
While the difficulty of all types of missions is iconic of the battle, the cinematic of this world is the best. Nothing is as terrifying and memorable at the same time as the fog enveloping a space jungle. Moving with your teammates slowly until red eyes light up in the darkness is a sight to behold. And what seems like a regular deployment can turn into a war with no way out in seconds. Add to this the fact that new players don’t know how to Automatons, and it’s pure mayhem from start to finish.
While challenging, I’d like to see more like Malevelon Creek in the game. Helldivers 2 is an installment that hooks you with its atmosphere and gameplay. Whether it is a world covered in white snow or a foggy jungle, every deployment is memorable. Thankfully, gamers worldwide are still joining the battle daily despite the difficulty spike. Hopefully, we’ll get even more recruits as time passes because, while getting requisition points to buy things is excellent, the true reward is our sweet liberty.
