An unspoken rule of the internet is if something is popular, memes will be made. One of the most memed properties of all time is Star Wars. Whether it is picking on a bad line or celebrating an epic moment, it seems like Star Wars memes are used on all corners of the internet. Even those who aren’t familiar with the films use them. This Thursday is May the 4th Day, an official day to celebrate all things Star Wars. There will likely be memes galore all over the web, so here are some of the best in preparation.
10. Order 66
One of the most used, yet darkest, Star Wars memes is Order 66. In Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine completes his ultimate plan by enacting Order 66, an order that causes the Clones to turn on the Jedi. Palpatine uttering “Execute Order 66” has become a meme in itself, but one of the darker aspects is what most fans meme on. Right before Palpatine gave the order, Anakin Skywalker officially turned to the dark side. The newly-christened Darth Vader seeks to prove himself. To do this, he leads an assault on the Jedi Temple, killing those that used to be his allies. It is a common joke for fans to put the music from the scene over various videos. On May the 4th Day, references to this scene will likely be abundant.
9. “I Have a Bad Feeling About This”
This may be one of the oldest examples of memes from the saga, as it has been used since well before the internet. A running joke in the series is a character saying, “I have a bad feeling about this.” First used by Luke in A New Hope, the phrase has been said in most of the movies in the franchise. Many fans keep an eye out for the line each time a new movie is released. Even the Clone Wars animated series has used it on multiple occasions. The line has also been altered for comedic effect in Solo. This May the 4th Day, fans can rest assured the phrase will be used extensively.
8. Yoda Dies
While this meme isn’t as frequently used as others on the list, it does have some fans that tend to use it. In Return of the Jedi, Luke goes to the aging Jedi Master to complete his training. Skywalker is disheartened to see that Yoda is in his final moments, and soon enough, he becomes one with the Force. While the scene itself is sad, there is one moment that causes fans to create memes. Luke had discovered the truth about his father, and he seeks questions from Yoda. When questioned, Yoda instead claims he needs rest and seems to prefer dying over answering the question. While Yoda eventually does answer Luke, the fact that he initially claims he needs rest is enough to make fans make some funny memes.
7. Rey Skywalker
One of the newest Star Wars memes comes from the final moments of the last movie. After defeating the clone of Palpatine and bringing down the First Order, Rey decided to go down her own path as a Jedi. She travels to Tatooine, where Luke used to live before joining the Rebels. While Rey primarily used the Skywalker Lightsaber up to this point, she has constructed her own using her staff. She has traveled to bury the legendary Lightsaber in the sand. While doing so, somebody asks her her name. She claims her name is Rey before seeing the Force Ghosts of Luke and Leia. She then clarifies by giving herself the full name Rey Skywalker. Many fans did not like this moment, and so memes began sprouting up almost instantly.
6. “Somehow, Palpatine Returned”
Also, from the last film, The Rise of Skywalker, comes a phrase that seems to exist solely to be a meme. Many fans were scratching their heads when it was revealed Palpatine will appear in the movie. Palpatine was killed at the hands of Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi. They had hoped the movie would explain this resurrection, but they instead got a silly line. While addressing the Resistance, Poe Dameron simply states, “Somehow, Palpatine Returned.” Fans felt this was lazy exposition, and even the line delivery implied Oscar Issac thought the line was bad. This May the 4th Day is sure to see the line uttered repeatedly.
5. “NOOOOOO”
While Revenge of the Sith is considered one of the best movies in the franchise, there are some meme-worthy moments throughout. One of them comes soon after Darth Vader receives his iconic armor. After much build-up and teasing, fans finally get to see the final transformation of Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader. After having his legendary helmet placed on his head, he asks his new master what has become of Padme, his wife. Wanting to lie to ensure Vader stays angry, Palpatine informs Vader that he killed Padme in rage. Distraught, Vader breaks from his restraints and screams, “NOOOOOOO.” While it is understandable why he is upset, it is pretty silly to see such an iconic villain give such a corny line.
4. “I Don’t Like Sand”
While mostly beloved now, the prequels were at one time the most hated Star Wars media. This was due largely in part to the corny dialogue. One of the key plot points in Attack of the Clones involved the forbidden romance between Anakin and Padme. This leads to some rather cringy moments with laughable lines. One of the most infamous comes when the two are having a conversation on Naboo. Padme talks about how her life living on Naboo, enjoying the beaches. Anakin responds by saying, “I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere.” The whiny nature of the line mixed with the delivery makes this one of the best-known Star Wars memes.
3. “Do it”
On May the 4th Day, many fans may say “Do it” in a gravelly voice. For those out of the loop, this comes from a line spoken in Revenge of the Sith. The opening of the film sees Anakin and Obi-Wan attempting to rescue Chancellor Palpatine from the clutches of General Grievous. After a duel, Anakin literally disarmed Count Dooku. While on his knees, Anakin has two lightsabers at the Sith’s neck. Palpatine eggs Anakin into killing his prisoner, but Anakin claims it is not the way of the Jedi. Growing frustrated, Palpatine simply says, “Do it” in a voice reminiscent of the one he uses as the Emperor. This line is simple, yet many fans use it constantly. The line was even reused as fan service in The Rise of Skywalker.
2. Darth Plagueis
It seems as if Revenge of the Sith is the most meme-worthy Star Wars movie. Yet another popular meme from Episode III comes near the middle. Knowing Anakin is suffering dreams of Padme dying, he uses this as an opportunity to plant the seeds of the Dark Side. He tells Anakin the tale of Darth Plagueis, a Sith Lord who could supposedly prevent death. While there is nothing funny about the scene, in fact, it is seen as one of the best, fans tend to use the story as a popular Copypasta. Look in any comment section of a Star Wars project, and there are bound to be one or two users who posted the speech. Especially on May the 4th Day.
1. “Hello There”
The most popular of the Star Wars memes come from, where else, Revenge of the Sith. After tracking General Grievous, Obi-Wan decides to confront the general in classic Obi-Wan fashion. While his back is turned, Kenobi drops down and says, “Hello There.” This line is actually a reference to the character’s first line in A New Hope, but this version has become a huge meme. For so many Star Wars fans, they greet each other by saying “Hello There” in their best Ewan McGregor impression. The line even appeared in the Kenobi series, much to the joy of fans. Of all the memes to be seen on May the 4th Day, this will likely be the most used.
