The CW has released the trailer for the final season of The Flash, which is coming to an end with its ninth season in 2023. The trailer opens with Joe (Jesse L. Martin) telling Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin), “You’ve been through a lot in nine years, and I’m very proud of you.” We then hear Barry say to an unknown person, “It’s not over yet. I need your help to save the world.” We are also treated to shots of Barry waking in the evening from nightmares, Andy Mientus returning as Hartley Rathaway/Pied Piper, and the debut of Richard Harmon as the villain Owen Mercer, the new post-Crisis Captain Boomerang. Entertainment Weekly explains that Nick E. Tarabay previously played this character and that he was killed off in Arrow season five. It appears a high-stakes battle is in place as The Flash takes its “final run” on the CW.
The CW Teases Final Season of ‘The Flash’
According to the CW’s description, the final season of The Flash picks up a week after the defeat of the Reverse Flash in the season eight finale. Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) are growing closer than ever. However, a deadly group of Rogues, led by a powerful new enemy, is threatening Central City. Barry and his team — Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet), Allegra Garcia (Kayla Compton), Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight), and Mark Blaine (Jon Cor) — must work together to defend the city one last time. However, they will encounter a deadly adversary who threatens Barry/The Flash’s heroic legacy.
The final season of The Flash marks the end of one of the last remaining shows of the Arrowverse’s original trilogy, which also included Arrow and Supergirl. The original show, Arrow, ended in 2020, while Supergirl ended in 2021. Since 2014, Grant Gustin has played Barry Allen/The Flash and carried the character through many battles and suit changes. While many were hoping he would continue the role in the DCEU, given the controversies and legal issues surrounding actor Ezra Miller, it appears Gustin is bidding this character farewell.
While The Flash may be coming to an end, the Arrowverse is not ending with it. Superman and Lois will soon enter its third season, and the CW is welcoming a new show, Gotham Knights. The season premiere of both shows will take place on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The final season of The Flash will premiere on the CW on February 8, 2023.
