Amazon is coming off The Rings of Power and will now tackle another major IP. Since coming on board Amazon Studios for a multi-year deal, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy of Intrepid Pictures will be adapting the Stephen King series The Dark Tower, as reported by Deadline. The two will be tackling the novels by making a five-season show and two feature-length films to take on King’s epic story.
Any fan of the filmmaker known for his Netflix shows like The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass knows that the King epic has been his dream project. When it comes to development, Mike Flanagan has written a pilot for the first season, an outline of the first season, and a “broader” outline for the rest of the series.
The novels are a blend of genres with a focus on being a Western with a mix of science-fantasy and horror. It follows Roland hunting down a man in black. It contains seven books that originated in 1982 and concluded in 2012. A short story was also published in 1998.
Mike Flanagan to adapt the Stephen King novel series The Dark Tower
The deal came about when the filmmaker and Macy got the rights to the books. The Hill House creator sent a pitch to the author, who accepted this vision. When it came to leaving Netflix for Amazon, this deal got made. It does not mean Amazon will stick with this vision as a Prime Video series, but it sets up the possibility of a start for an attempt at this daunting plan.
The Amazon deal rings the bell for a new era for Mike Flanagan and Intrepid as The Dark Tower hangs above with a possible series and movie adaption. This comes off a long run on Netflix. He had created shows like Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, which was canceled after one season with no effect to the Amazon deal; and The Haunting of Bly Manor. When it came to films on the streamer, he had directed Gerald’s Game and Hush. The conclusion to this era of this career will be The Fall of the House of Usher, an Edgar Allan Poe adaption that will hit the platform next year.
