The final trailer for the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker has dropped during ESPN’s Monday Night Football. Because releasing a Star Wars trailer during this matchup is the only way anyone would willingly tune in to see the New England Patriots demolish the New York Jets. Anyway, you can check out the full trailer down below:

This trailer certainly had it all including some gorgeous locations, iconic music, and compelling teases of what we can expect to see in this grand finale (the Emporer’s return and the Kylo Ren/Rey duel are strongly hinted at during the trailer). As is the tradition in Star Wars, we also had a Death Star appearance!

The Rise of Skywalker will be the final chapter in the 9-film Skywalker saga, which began back in 1977 with A New Hope. After Rian Johnson’s “controversial” The Last Jedi divided the fanbase, it’ll be interesting to see how J.J. Abrams (who directed Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens) ends this journey.

For those who are worried Abrams will play it safe with The Rise of Skywalker, check out this snippet from an interview Abrams had with Vanity Fair:

“Having seen what Rian did made me approach this from a place of instinct and gut. I was making choices I knew I would not have made on VII, some story-wise, but more in terms of directing. I found myself feeling less like I’m going to try and do something that feels like it’s [only] true to the specifics of this franchise or the story.”

Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20th, 2019.
