One of horror’s most influential franchises has a groovy update. The next Evil Dead movie that will follow up last year’s splashy hit Evil Dead Rise has found its director with Sébastien Vaniček. The indie filmmaker made his debut last year with Infested (Vermines) and will now tackle the gory horror world of chainsaws and charismatic survivors.
The last film was directed and written by Lee Cronin. A decade after the self-titled film by Fede Alvarez, a fresh take took us out of the woods and into a Los Angeles apartment building as Deadites were unleashed on an unsuspecting family. Without any competition, it ripped and tore its way to being the best-performing entry at the box office with $146 million. Now, the next one is set to keep the momentum going forward.
The (Sparce) Details of the Next Evil Dead Movie From Director Sébastien Vaniček
Deadline broke the news today about what we should expect from the next entry. It is a major moment for the new filmmaker as he comes off his directorial debut and signing to CAA. Not long after getting his new representation, he got a deal from Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures. It matches how the Spider-Man director has spotted early talent from Cronin and Alvarez to deliver their interpretation of the Necronomicon and its demented plans. Now, something in Vermines has caught his attention to let this new talent come in to tell a new story in the world.
Currently, no details about the film regarding its story or casting are known.
It is not a surprise to receive an update on the next Evil Dead movie. Bruce Campbell previously confirmed to Collider that we can expect new films “every two or three years.” While he does not want to “wear people out,” he is still determined to produce with Raimi more entries as new filmmakers write their versions of the Necronomicon.
The filmmaker’s debut had some similarities to Evil Dead Rise. It followed residents of a French apartment building as their lives were thrown into chaos by an infestation of spiders. It led to a premiere at Fantastic Fest and won at the film festival for Best Picture and Best Director. The film then went to the Sitges Film Festival, where it earned a nod for Best Motion Picture and a win for a Special Jury Prize.
