Hell is upon us once again in Diablo 4 (for the nth time!), but this time, it’s different. Because in Diablo 4 Season 5, hell comes in hordes– Infernal Hordes! That’s also the new game mode or season mechanic, and it’s practically a horde survival mode. Here’s what you need to know about it, how to join it, and its rewards.
Starting Infernal Hordes in Diablo 4 Season 5
You can technically follow the seasonal side quest and it will lead you there, but Infernal Hordes– the real one, not the quest-related trials, will only be available once you get to World Tier 3 (unlocked through the Capstone Dungeon in Kyovashad).
Upon reaching or unlocking World Tier 3 (which is recommended for Level 50 characters), you’ll get a quest called Eyes of the Enemy. It also goes without saying that you need to have finished the main campaign. Once you finish “Eyes of the Enemy,” the real Infernal Hordes will begin.
Infernal Hordes are similar to Nightmare Dungeons. They are also dungeon instances that you need to clear. However, Infernal Hordes areas are smaller and you’re more static. All you have to do is survive several enemy waves, claim the power-ups, and claim the final reward which can range from the new gear to even Masterwork upgrade materials.
Access Infernal Hordes Using the Infernal Compass
Assuming you’ve already completed the Diablo 4 main campaign, unlocked World Tier 3, and finished the “Eyes of the Enemy” quest, here’s how to access Infernal Hordes step-by-step.
- Open your inventory.
- Go to the Consumables tab.
- Right-click or activate the Infernal Compass.
- This will highlight the Gates of Hell or Infernal Hordes location on the map, and you can teleport here like you would a Nightmare Dungeon.
- Complete the Infernal Hordes run.
Now, as for Infernal Compasses, you can obtain them in Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, or boss chests. Refer to this guide for more details on obtaining Infernal Compasses.
Like Nightmare Dungeons, you can also craft higher-tier Infernal Compasses through the Occultist NPC. These will yield better rewards but come with tougher enemies.
Infernal Hordes Rewards in Diablo 4 Season 5
At the end of every Infernal Hordes run, you’re presented with three chests:
- Equipment Chest (costs 20 Aether each) – Drops gear.
- Resource Chest (costs 20 Aether each) – Drops crating materials and gems.
- Gold (all your current or remaining Aether)
Do not pick gold of course– unless you absolutely need it. But there are better ways of earning gold in-game. If you don’t have a complete build yet, always pick the Equipment Chest since a lot of the new unique items are accessible here.
Higher tiers (Tier 3+) might also reward you with the Greater Affix Chest option, which can shorten your hunt for the perfect Legendary gear.
