A family trip to what appears to be an Illinois hotel pool took a distressing turn after a woman, whom many online have labeled a “Karen,” was accused of calling police during a confrontation with the only black family there. The footage has since spread widely online, with many viewers accusing the woman of racial profiling.
As the footage begins, a woman wearing what appears to be a long white blouse can be seen speaking on her phone while the father records the encounter. He says, “Okay, so I’m going to record this. So I’m sitting out here with the pool with my children. I’m the only black man out here. So the nice white people come out here to tell me, if I don’t show them my ID, I have to leave, but no one else has to show their ID. So now she’s gonna call the police on me. The police are gonna come, in front of my children.”
As the confrontation continues, the father says his family are residents at the property and questions why he is being asked to produce identification when, according to him, no one else at the pool had been asked to do the same. He also points out that the women appear to be smiling before one of them asks not to be recorded. The father continues filming and replies, “When the police come, I’ll be here.” He also refers to them as “Karen and her friend.”
As the encounter unfolds, the father questions why he is being asked to produce identification, asking rhetorically, “Who takes an ID to the swimming pool? Nobody else has been asked to show their identification.” He then pans the camera around the pool, showing his family nearby while a lone swimmer can also be seen in the water.
Calling the situation “crazy,” the father briefly pans the camera away from the confrontation to show his children sitting on nearby poolside lounge chairs. He then mutters, “Welcome to Chicago,” under his breath, and records one guy swimming in the pool. “Look at the white man. He’s swimming. Does the kid over there need his ID?” and points to another white person on the opposite side of the pool.
Moments later, the emotional toll of the confrontation becomes more apparent. The father’s older son quietly walks away from the interaction. “Where you going, Al?” the father asks, but the boy does not respond.
His younger son then approaches him, appearing visibly upset. “Dad, are you gonna fetch your ID?” he asks. The father declines, explaining that he does not need to show identification to be at the pool. The child pleads with him again, saying the police are being called and urging him to get his ID.
As the boy becomes increasingly distressed, the father tries to reassure him, saying, “I don’t want y’all to be traumatized by this, though. Don’t cry. You don’t have to cry.” Through tears, the child responds, “I don’t want you to go to jail. Please, just get your ID.”
The father responds, “Just because we’re black, we can sit [at the pool] just like everybody else.” He then quietly mutters, “Welcome to Chicago,” for a second time as the clip draws to a close. The footage ends before showing how the confrontation was resolved. However, in a later update shared in the Reddit thread, the original uploader claimed police arrived and confirmed he did not have to show identification after he explained he was staying at the property.
The footage quickly spread across social media, where hundreds of Reddit users weighed in on the confrontation.
Viewers Rally Around the Family
Many Reddit users said the most difficult part of the video to watch was the apparent impact the confrontation had on the children. One commenter wrote, “Broke my heart when I heard the boy crying worried about his dad 💔.” Another added, “That poor kid 🙁.”
Others focused their criticism on the woman at the center of the confrontation. One user wrote, “Hope she loses her job.” Another argued she had shown “not a lick of common sense” or hospitality.
The original uploader later shared an update in the Reddit thread, claiming police eventually arrived and confirmed he did not have to show identification after he explained he was staying at the property. He also said the encounter had “really traumatized” his children and claimed the woman continued smiling after seeing one of his sons cry. Despite the ordeal, he said he ultimately got into the pool to play with his boys after the confrontation ended and added that he is considering legal action.
While the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear, the video has continued to generate widespread discussion online, with many viewers expressing sympathy for the family and condemning the encounter. As the clip continues to make the rounds, it has also reignited broader conversations about racial profiling and the impact such incidents can have on young children.
