The highly-anticipated The Witcher series for Netflix has reportedly cast two more leading roles. Following the news of Henry Cavill’s (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) casting as titular character Geralt of Rivia, fans have been anxiously awaiting who might join the show next.
Joining Cavill in the main cast are Freya Allan (War of the Worlds, Bluebird) and Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust, The ABC Murders). Allan will take on the role of Ciri, Geralt’s somewhat daughter and protege witcher. Chalotra will join in as Yennefer, a powerful sorceress and one of Geralt’s love interests.
Based on the popular polish books written by Andrzej Sapkowski and later adapted into the juggernaut video game series The Witcher from developer CD Projekt Red, Netflix’s The Witcher will follow Geralt of Rivia through his adventures as a monster hunter within a vast fantasy world.
Netflix’s official description of the show has already been posted to their site:
The witcher Geralt, a mutated monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts.
While that is a pretty broad summary, it leaves a lot the imagination. The possibilities are seemingly endless for where the series could be headed.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt has said that she is a fan of The Witcher video games, but the Netflix series will not rely on them for their story or content. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Schmidt stated:
We needed to create our own visual representation… as I’ve been developing the series I’ve actually pulled back from playing the video games because I wanted to make sure the show we were creating was its own unique thing.
It looks like we will be getting a brand new take on The Witcher when the show finally airs, which might be quite some time considering production has not yet started and no release date has been announced.
