Nobody heads to the beach expecting to see sewage washing onto the sand. But that’s exactly what appears to be happening in a viral video shared from Coronado, California, where murky water can be seen washing ashore as frustration over the region’s long-running pollution problems boils over once again. The clip has spread across social media and Reddit, with many viewers saying they’re tired of seeing the same issue resurface while some of Southern California’s most popular beaches continue to face contamination concerns.
The footage was posted to Reddit’s r/SanDiego community under the title, “This has to stop.” The user also described the scene as “Coronado today where the Mexican sewage meets the sand,” a reference to the ongoing cross-border wastewater crisis that has impacted beaches along the Southern California coast.
In the video, a “Keep Out of the Water” contamination warning sign is clearly visible near the shoreline. Behind it, waves continue to roll onto the beach, but some appear noticeably darker than usual, with murky yellow-brown water mixing into the surf. The footage has led many viewers to speculate that the water may be contaminated by sewage.
The footage quickly caught the attention of Reddit users, many of whom said they were frustrated to see the issue continuing to affect local beaches.
‘This Has to Stop’: Locals Voice Concerns Over Ongoing Pollution Issues
On Reddit, many commenters said the footage was less surprising than it was frustrating, with some arguing that concerns about water quality have been hanging over parts of the San Diego coastline for decades.
One user wrote, “Coronado used to be one of the nicest beach communities on the west coast. Now I won’t swim anywhere south of La Jolla. I always feel terrible when tourists come here and jump in the water.”
Others suggested the problem is far from new. One commenter claimed, “It’s been nasty since the late 80’s.”
Several users also discussed the broader wastewater issues affecting the region. A third commenter remarked, “The ocean current actually brings it up from Tijuana. No coast is safe, but at least it’s diluted.”
Not everyone had a lengthy response. Some simply reacted to the footage itself, with one viewer writing bluntly, “gross af.” Another added, “Wow, had no idea it was this visible! Yuck.”
For many commenters, the video wasn’t just an unpleasant sight — it was a reminder of a problem they feel has gone unresolved for far too long. In recent years, beach closures and water contamination advisories have repeatedly affected parts of San Diego County, prompting concerns from residents, surfers, and local businesses alike. As the footage continues to circulate online, many are once again asking when a lasting solution will finally arrive.
