A man who has been protesting a local ICE detention facility in New Jersey said he had an unexpected guest come to his door this week – someone who he said identified as an FBI agent who wanted to talk about what he has been posting on social media. The quick conversation, captured on video, is now sparking a big debate online about freedom of speech, government overreach, and what some say are intimidation tactics.
Craig Brittain, who is also a former candidate for the Arizona Senate and has been posting a lot of content from protests outside Delaney Hall (a federal immigrant detention center in Newark), said on Instagram that a man who claimed to be from the FBI came to his door to ask him about “anti-ICE” posts on his social media.
He said the agent didn’t say which posts he was concerned about.
Brittain recorded the exchange. He says the agent told him to stop filming, which he didn’t, so he asked for a warrant. No warrant was provided, and the person left without going inside his house or arresting him. The conversation was less than a minute long.
One thing people are talking about online is what the agent was wearing. According to comments about the interaction and also visible in the video itself, the agent was wearing an outfit with FIFA World Cup and Nike logos, which seems a bit odd for someone working for the feds.
Internet Reacts to Alleged FBI Visit Over Anti-ICE Posts in New Jersey
The video and accompanying account sparked a wide range of reactions online.
One commenter wrote simply, “This is absolutely anti-American.” Another questioned what exactly may have prompted the visit, writing, “‘An anti-ICE social media post.’ Wonder what he specifically said — or threatened.”
Several comments focused on the broader implications of federal agents following up on social media posts. One user wrote, “FBI and DHS are spending tax dollars calling people out for CONSTITUTIONALLY PROTECTED speech,” while another reacted more strongly, stating, “This is exactly how a fascist state begins folks! It’s utterly disturbing!”
Not all reactions accepted the framing at face value. One commenter raised doubts about the agent’s identity based on appearance, writing, “That’s a strange looking FBI shirt, World Cup? And where’s his gun? Something seems screwy, or did I miss something?”
So far, the FBI hasn’t released a statement confirming or denying whether the incident at Brittain’s New Jersey home happened, or if the person was actually an FBI agent. The video doesn’t show a clear badge, and the person reportedly didn’t give their full name.
