Author J.R.R. Tolkien created masterful worlds in The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and more. His work has inspired so many people, that multiple publications based on his world have been printed. A notable series of these is from author Peter Roe. His third book in the series, The First and Second Ages, has fallen out of print over the years since its original publication date. But now it is returning.
The First and Second Ages, originally published in 1992, focuses on that specific period in Tolkien mythology.
The First and Second Ages within Tolkien’s legendarium feel like a time far removed from that of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings even though they constitute the underpinnings of J.R.R. Tolkien’s entire mythology. This book explores those underpinnings and in particular the nature of good and evil, creators and destroyers, and the very foundations of the world itself. It is a diverse collection of four articles which will no doubt cause the reader to reflect on their own understanding of Tolkien’s works.”
Though it has since fallen out of print, a partnership between The Tolkien Society and Luna Press is bringing it back. In a statement The Tolkien Society said:
Just as we worked to digitize all our historic magazines and journals – available for free to all members of the Society in the our members’ area – our aim is for all historic Peter Roe books to be republished in this format and made available to purchase. This will ensure that previous scholarship can be available to new readers, whilst collectors will be able to acquire the entire set.”
The First and Second Ages will be available on September 4th, 2020. It is currently available for pre-order through Luna Press’ website for £7.50 and is a print-on-demand publication. What are your thoughts on Tolkien’s works? Let us know in the comments below.
