Conan the Barbarian has captivated audiences since Robert E. Howard first invented the character. The real triumph of Conan Exiles is in its faithful replication of the source material. As in Howard’s stories, the world of Conan Exiles is harsh and brutish. Scorpions and thieves might kill you before you even get to read the patch notes. While the characters might not be having fun, players certainly are. With regular fixes and mods to enhance Funcom‘s game, life as a barbarian has never been so thrilling. Here are the best Conan Exiles mods, in no particular order.
20. Animal Taming Cage
(Updated on October 9, 2024 – updated images, links, and format)
The Animal Taming Cage mod introduces various cages, staples, and rugs with which to tame horses and other animals. Wildlife has always featured prominently in Conan stories, and Conan Exiles is no exception. With this mod, players will have better ways to bring wildlife to heel and become the desert pet masters of their dreams.
19. Professions
Easily one of the best Conan Exiles mods, Professions adds six character classes and four forms of magic to Funcom’s already expansive game. The classes are Warrior, Outlaw, Artisan, Nomad, Mystic, and Entertainer, and each adds something unique. If you love the game but have grown weary of the existing character options and build variety, Professions is the mod for you.
18. Put Them Away
The Put Them Away mod has two main functions. The first places every item in the player’s backpack into nearby containers that already store that kind of item. The second withdraws every item needed for crafting from nearby containers. Together, these features make the process of sorting your inventory and crafting much less cumbersome, which is certainly a plus.
17. Warrior Mutator
The Warrior Mutator mod adds new weapons, armor, and other items. More importantly, it tweaks and rebalances a number of features, including weapon damage, armor values, and other stats. Conan Exiles is already fun when it comes to combat, but having more gear and some tweaked numbers polishes the experience to a brighter shine.
16. Emberlight
Emberlight is bigger and more complex than most mods for Conan Exiles, so it’s a bit harder to summarize its content. Suffice it to say that Emberlight aims to enhance the gameplay experience for roleplayers by increasing immersion. From improving character creation options to altering thralls and item spawns, Emberlight touches on large and small aspects of the game alike.
15. Thralls Are Alive
The aim of Thralls Are Alive is to breathe new life into these followers. This includes the addition of a Day/Night cycle and appropriate routines. With this mod, thralls will realistically patrol, idle, train, and sleep. Seeing these realistic behaviors in place makes one realize how off things feel without them. Thanks to Thralls Are Alive, that’s not a problem Conan players will have anymore.
14. Female Presets
The Female Presets mod is perfect for players torn between wanting to jump right into the game and wanting a character that actually looks good. This selection of preset appearances for female characters lets the player get right to the gameplay without leaving their character looking rushed or generic. Players who prefer to finetune cosmetic options themselves might not need this mod, but others will find it quite helpful.
13. Increased Two-Handed Weapon Damage
This simple mod solves a notable issue of two-headed weapons in Conan Exiles not consistently feeling as impactful as they should. The solution is to increase the damage they deal across the board. This includes special damage buffs for Exceptional and Flawless weapons, rewarding adventurers who took the time to get such items. Players will have to decide for themselves how they feel about the resulting balance chaznges but Increased Two-Handed Weapon Damage sure is fun.
12. Squad Mod
Adventuring can be lonely. That’s all the more reason to bring along a follower or five. Squad Mod enables just that, allowing the player to take a custom squad of thralls along with them on adventures. The group can then be commanded to follow, guard, scout, or return home. For those who prefer direct control over their allies, this might be the perfect way to get it.
11. Catch And Carry
In Conan Exiles, defeated thralls can be dragged to the wheel of pain and then converted. That process can be needlessly frustrating, however. The Catch and Carry mod provides a solution: stuff defeated thralls in your backpack instead of dragging them. It might not be immersive, but it makes the process less annoying, and for some players, that’s a fair trade.
10. Lament
The Lament mod offers an alternative method of dealing with character death rather than simple corpse runs. When a character dies, the weapons and armor in their backpack will lose durability, and the character will gain Corruption. Lament is excellent for spicing up roleplay and making the traditional run back to your fallen body less repetitive.
9. Improved Graphics
Funcom provided a good visual base for Conan Exiles, but there was room for improvement. What makes Improved Graphics one of the best Conan Exiles mods is it artfully does exactly what it says — overhauls the visuals of the game. It touches everything from antialiasing to draw distances, and the result is an experience that looks better than ever. It’s far from essential, but it’s hard to argue with a straightforward upgrade like this one.
8. Player Character Customization Mod
The Player Character Customization Mod allows the player to modify their character’s appearance at any time during the game. If you’re the kind of player who tends to regret their cosmetic changes or you just like to recolor your hair every day, this mod works wonders. As if that weren’t enough, it also allows the player to customize their thrall. Matching hairstyles, anyone?
7. Natural Reshade
The Natural Reshade mod adheres to the game’s original visual style while cleaning up and sharpening the look of every scene. Conan Exiles has a distinct aesthetic, and the Natural Reshade mod wisely avoids messing with it. There are no major alterations here, just a better, more polished version of the original. When it comes to shaders, it’s hard to beat that.
6. Up To 120 Level
The default level cap in Conan Exiles is 60. The Up To 120 Level mod doubles that. Doubling the level cap is obviously a pretty serious adjustment to balance, so this mod won’t be for everyone. Given the sometimes awkward pacing of leveling, however, it actually feels pretty good to not hit a brick wall in terms of character advancement. This might not be the biggest game ever, but thanks to mods like this one, it is constantly expanding.
5. Barbarian Barber
Funcom’s basic character creation options leave a lot of room for improvement. Barbarian Barber specifically fixes one area of concern: the lack of interesting hairstyles. Is adding 150 hairstyles for both sexes enough to make this one of the best Conan Exiles mods? Absolutely. We’ll take any chance to further customize our characters, and this mod gives us just that.
4. Immersive Armors
Adding a total of 400+ new items to the game, Immersive Armors massively improves players’ clothing options. Armor, weapons, and even jewelry and accessories are all included. Lore enthusiasts will be happy to know that Immersive Armors does its best to adhere to the game’s original style. Nothing here feels out of place. These are just quality garments to help style your character better.
3. Rhino WarMount
The Rhino WarMount mod lets you ride armored rhinos into battle. Does there really need to be any more argument made for why this mod is awesome? When you aren’t riding it, the rhino acts like an ordinary fighter thrall. That means it will attack, guard, and hold. If you set it to use ranged attacks, it will execute a charge instead. As cool as it is useful, the rhino warmount is a fantastic addition.
2. TheForsakenSabers
TheForsakenSabers adds lightsabers to Conan Exiles. Do lightsabers fit the game’s lore? No. Neither do they fit its barbarian aesthetic. Conversely, are they cool? Yes. Ultimately, that’s what matters. For players who are okay with venturing far from the game’s original concept in the pursuit of awesomeness, this mod offers all of the saber-clashing greatness you could ask for. That includes multiple blade colors, dual-wielding, and double-bladed lightsabers.
1. Spiders To Scorpions
The Spiders to Scorpions mod turns the many giant spiders in the game into giant scorpions. Is that an improvement? If you have arachnophobia, absolutely. Even players who don’t mind seeing those other creepy crawlies in the game may prefer the diversity of scorpions instead, especially because they fit so well with the game’s wasteland aesthetic.
