Gone are the days when a game’s release signified its final version. Between DLCs, updates, and mods, games can completely transform after a few months or years. Of these options, mods are in some ways the most interesting, pooling the talents of countless artists, programmers, and gamers. Warner Bros. Games’s gigantic Harry Potter RPG drew a lot of attention when it launched, and it’s only gotten better since. Whether you’re looking for graphical tweaks, AI overhauls, or some better cosmetic options, these mods for the Wizarding World won’t disappoint. Here are the best mods for Hogwarts Legacy, ranked from good to indispensable.

5. School Makeup

Customization is one of the most important features of any RPG. Whether you’re perfecting your wardrobe, picking the right glasses to frame your face, or choosing your spells before hunting the Daedalian Keys, making a character feel authentically yours is a big deal. The default character creation options in Hogwarts Legacy are decent, but they definitely leave room for improvement. Two areas that need help the most are skin tone and makeup. There just aren’t enough options for either. The School Makeup mod by Aliize is a simple solution that goes a long way toward addressing one of these issues. You’ll still need some other mods if you want a truly robust character creator, but School Makeup remains an easy pick.

4. DragonOgryff

This mod swaps the Hippogriff model for a Hebridean dragon. That would be cool even if Hippogriffs were only featured in the game as monsters, but in Hogwarts Legacy, they serve as mounts. Yes, this mod by Showie lets you fly around on a dragon, and yes, it’s as cool as it sounds. There are some minor issues with the animations still, but overall these fearsome creatures look and function just the way you’d want. If you’ve always wished you could journey with Charlie Weasley to study dragons in faraway lands, this is one of the best mods for Hogwarts Legacy. There’s even an alternative Thestral model if you’re looking to add a bit of grim ambiance to your character’s flights.

3. Autohomora

Lockpicking minigames are pretty standard in RPGs. Some players love nothing more than putting their thief skills to the best by cracking open every locked door and chest in Skyrim. Others, however, don’t care for lockpicking. Whether that’s because it’s difficult, boring, or just interrupts the flow of gameplay doesn’t really matter. They want it gone. If that describes you, the Autohomora mod by VTLI is one of the best in Hogwarts Legacy. This simple mod autocompletes the Alohomora lockpicking minigame for you whenever you try to open a door. No more staring at locks wishing they would just open!

2. NPC Schedule Enhanced (Better AI)

The NPC Schedule Enhanced (Better AI) mod by Khione95 revamps the daily schedules of the many NPCs in Hogwarts Legacy to make them more complex and realistic. With this mod, all named NPCs now have proper schedules. That includes attending classes, going to their Common Rooms at night, and even visiting Hogsmeade during the weekends. This brings the game much closer to the realism of a game like Red Dead Redemption 2. As a result, it feels far more immersive. If it always annoyed you how lifeless the game sometimes feels, especially at night, NPC Schedule Enhanced goes a long way toward addressing that. If this mod can one day be extended to include all NPCs, the Wizarding World will truly come alive.

Stuttering, FPS drops, and other issues can break immersion and quickly spoil any game. The Ascendio 2.1 – FPS Hotfix and Engine Tweaks for Hogwarts Legacy mod by Seifunaru does exactly what it sounds like, addressing a number of small and large performance issues. Fixing engine and FPS issues may not be as exciting as turning Hippogrifs into Dragons, but it’s arguably the most important change you can make to your game. After all, the smoother gameplay that results is beneficial no matter what you’re doing in the game. There are a number of hotfix and engine tweak mods around, but Ascendio ranks amongst the best and most downloaded mods for Hogwarts Legacy for a reason.

Hogwarts Legacy is available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
