We’re now a week into the month of May and many of you may be wondering what you can get your hands on this month. From terrifying first person shooters to nostalgic platformers, to cinematic fighting games. May might seem like a quiet month compared to the last few, but there is still plenty to keep you busy.
Prey is the first major title releasing this month. And good news, it’s already out. This Sci-Fi horror shooter, released on May 5th. The game seems to be a spiritual successor to the likes of System Shock and the original Bioshock. As Morgan Yu you’ll explore the space station Talos I. It is here while orbiting Earth’s moon that an alien race called the Typhon escape confinement and reap havoc on the ship. You’ll use a mixture of weaponry and ingenuity to best Arkane Studio’s latest action game. Let’s hope you survive.

Coming out right in the middle of the month is Injustice 2. NetherRealm studios have amassed quite a following over recent years. And now after the overwhelming success of Mortal Kombat X, the studio is returning with Injustice 2. The game features many familiar faces from the first game, such as Superman, Batman, and the Flash, but also features newcomers such as Super Girl, Darkseid, and Scarecrow. The devs have also showcased how this brawler will have a major focus on gear, and designing your own personal heroes.

Also releasing on May 16th is The Surge. Demon Souls started it all, with the Dark Souls series releasing shortly after. Now we have Bloodborne, Lords of the Fallen, Nioh and Code Vein. It’s gotten to the point now, that the Souls series has become its own genre. Well, the next game to tackle this formula is The Surge. Taking the same clunky controls, grueling difficulty and immaculate boss design of the Souls series and placing it in a Sci-Fi Mech suit backdrop. Hopefully, The Surge is a quality title and not just joining in on the fad.

Skylar and Plux is definitely the game I’m most excited about this month. Hoping to pay homage to the long lost 3D platformer, Skylar and Plux looks to be a spiritual successor to Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. A charming mascot accompanied by a loud-mouth sidekick, check. Colorful and well-designed worlds to explore, check. An obviously evil villain who needs to be thwarted, check. This game will be a nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up in the early 2000’s. Make sure you give Skylar and Plux some love, as it hasn’t been getting the attention it deserves.

Towards the end of the month, we’re getting a game we thought we might never get. Rime was originally a PS4 exclusive, that is until Sony gave it the boot. However, Tequila Works recovered from their losses and will release Rime on May 26th. The title seems to be a mish-mash of Windwaker’s art direction, Journey’s story, and The Witness’ puzzles. If Rime is anywhere near as good as any of those titles, we’ll have a winner on our hands.
