Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood is returning for a series of six audio dramas produced by Big Finish, entitled “Torchwood: The Conspiracy”, and will be led by John Barrowman, reprising his role as Captain Jack. Each of the audio dramas will focus on different members of the Torchwood team, exploring the impact that a mysterious event has on them. The first installment will be released in September 2015, with the five remaining chapters following monthly beginning in January 2016.

Torchwood, created by Russell T Davies, follows a small team of alien hunters, who make up the Cardiff based, fictional Torchwood institute, which deals mainly with incidents involving extraterrestrials. Torchwood originally launched in 2006 and ran for four series until 2011, with stars John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Burn Gorman, Naoko Mori, and Gareth David Lloyd.

The show first premiered on BBC Three and BBC HD in 2006, returned in 2008 on BBC Two, with its third series premiering on BBC One. A fourth series was co-produced by BBC Wales, BBC Worldwide, and US premium entertainment network Starz, airing in 2011 under the title Torchwood: Miracle Day. From its inception, the BBC invested in a heavy online presence for the series, with an alternate reality game running alongside the show’s first two series, and an animated web series running alongside its fourth, garnering a massive online cult following.

On the news that Torchwood was given new life on audio, creator Russell T Davies said: “Torchwood has been to the Moon, and America, and the Himalayas, but now I think it’s finally coming home, to the brilliance of Big Finish.”

Executive producer Nicholas Briggs added: “Torchwood is something we’ve wanted to do for ages. It has great characters and there are many stories to be told. Our mission is to bring a whole new series of dramatic adventures to life.”

James Goss, who is producing the Torchwood audio dramas, said, “It’s just so exciting to be starting off the range with a drama starring John Barrowman – he leapt at the chance to display a whole new side to Captain Jack.”

Additional cast members will be revealed as we get closer to the premier. You can pre-order the series now by clicking here, or subscribe to the entire series.
