President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to those responsible for the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, mother of NBC “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. In a phone interview with The Post, Trump made it clear that anyone harming the 84-year-old would face the “most severe” federal consequences, signaling the Justice Department could seek the death penalty.
Trump Promises Harsh Federal Consequences if Nancy Guthrie Is Harmed
Trump told The Post that the abductors would face “very, very severe, the most severe” federal consequences if Nancy Guthrie is found dead after being taken from her home outside Tucson on February 1.
Asked if that meant the Justice Department would request the death penalty, Trump confirmed, saying: “The most, yeah, that’s true.”
He also called Savannah Guthrie on February 4 to offer federal assistance in the case. Authorities have since recovered images and video showing a masked man at the suburban home’s front door, heightening concern for the elderly mother of three.
Over the weekend, search teams conducted flights above the desert region using a high-tech Bluetooth device in hopes of detecting a signal from Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker.
Federal charges are common in high-profile cases, particularly when an interstate component exists or federal statutes are violated. Arizona has the death penalty, though executions have been rare, with just two carried out since 2022.
Investigators and Public React
As authorities work tirelessly to locate Nancy Guthrie, social media and public attention remain intense. Savannah Guthrie has appealed directly to the abductor, urging: “It’s never too late to do the right thing.”
Arizona Sheriff Chris Nanos has suggested the kidnapping “could’ve been snatched in ‘revenge for something’,” while cautioning the public against jumping to conclusions.
The federal government can pursue capital punishment in notorious cases, as seen with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Robert Bowers, and Dylann Roof. Trump officials plan to move those sentenced to a federal supermax prison to serve out harsh penalties, reflecting the president’s commitment to seeing justice served if Nancy Guthrie is harmed.
