If you’re a Star Wars fan looking forward to Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, you might have to wait a while. In a new financial report from Ubisoft, the studio has reported that they’ve chosen to delay a “large game.” While Ubisoft has not outright said that Star Wars Outlaws is the game in question, it’s long since been theorized that Outlaws should be coming out within this fiscal year. Given that it’s supposedly an expansive game that’s hitting a lot of franchise milestones, the idea of it being delayed isn’t very shocking.
Why Has Star Wars Outlaws Been Delayed?
In a new report detailing the first half of its fiscal year, Ubisoft had a lot to say about the success of new releases like Assassin’s Creed Mirage, The Crew Motorfest, and Rainbow Six Siege. However, Ubisoft also reported that they could confirm their projected earnings without releasing a “large game” that was meant to come out before the end of the fiscal year in March 2024.
The overperformance in Q2 and the current positive momentum of Ubisoft’s brands build confidence for the rest of the year. The Company can therefore confirm its announced guidance of strong top line growth…without releasing the other large game it had initially planned to launch during the last quarter of the current fiscal year. The Company has decided to launch this other large game in FY2024-25, so as to maximize its value creation.”

While they’re staying quiet about what that “large game” actually is, there’s been some speculation that they mean Star Wars Outlaws. One of the larger projects currently in the works at Ubisoft, Star Wars Outlaws would see players in the shoes of Kay Vess. Along with a ragtag crew and an animal companion, wily outlaw Vess is exploring the Outer Rim in between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The game hasn’t gotten a concrete release window yet, and as the franchise’s first open-world game, some delays might be expected. Since the reasoning behind Ubisoft’s delay says nothing about developmental delays, however, it’s possible that we’ll see Ubisoft’s “large game” only a few months later than expected once the fiscal year rolls around.
The only way to know for sure which “large game” has been delayed and when it plans to come out would be to stay tuned to Ubisoft’s press releases for the next few months.
