While most people would hide or run for their lives in the midst of an active shooter and a presidential assassination attempt in Washington DC, no less, one guest went viral for staying calm and unbothered. The rather unconcerned man has since become a subject of fascination online for his attitude regarding the failed assassination attempt on US President Donald Trump.
Michael Glantz is the guest in question, and on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton in Washington DC, gunfire prompted Secret Service agents to rush into the ballroom and evacuate the president along with other officials. As guests ducked for cover, video footage captured Michael Glantz, a senior talent agent at Creative Artists Agency, quietly continuing to eat his burrata salad.
The clip quickly spread online, earning Glantz the nickname “#SaladMan” as viewers reacted to his unbothered demeanor in the middle of a high-stress security emergency. Speaking afterward, Glantz said he never felt truly alarmed. “I’m a New Yorker. We live with sirens and activity happening all the time,” he explained, adding that the heavy presence of armed agents actually reassured him. “I wasn’t scared… I wanted to watch.”
His reasoning for staying seated, however, struck many as both practical and oddly humorous. “First of all, I have a bad back,” he said. “And I’m a hygiene freak. There was no way I was getting my new tux on the dirty floor.” While some social media users praised his composure, others questioned his priorities, noting the seriousness of the situation. Still, Glantz appeared unfazed by the attention, later calling the viral reaction “silly” but saying he didn’t mind people laughing.
People Online are Raising Their Eyebrows
Glantz wasn’t the only attendee who drew attention. Separate clips also showed guests grabbing bottles of champagne and even taking selfies amid the confusion, leading to what many described as a bizarre contrast between danger and nonchalance. Meanwhile, X users were scratching their heads at Glantz’s survival instincts.
“So a shooting is happening and he’s worried about his tux?” questions a commenter. Others argued that the situation could’ve ended differently and that Glantz merely got lucky, “The problem is that had the situation been different the shooter would very likely had picked him off first & anybody else around him, he not only put himself in danger but all those at his table & near it. Getting your suit dirty is preferable to having a bullet in your head & the heads of all those around him. Badly done.”
Others, however, resonated with Glantz’s response, especially the part where he implies he’s a hardened American because of New York. “He said he’s from New York, and he’s afraid of nothing,” points out another commenter, while an X user jokes about Glantz powering through the incident, “Dinner and a show… what a night for him. People laughing and taking selfies and sitting eating dinner through it all.”
