A California mom suggests that it may be difficult for teens to find jobs this summer vacation. Why? The jobs they would ordinarily work are now being swept up by people with Master’s Degrees. According to her, that’s what happens when there are so few jobs available for workers.
One shared a TikTok captioned: “The summer job market: Your teen is competing with people with a Master’s Degree.” She says this is the way you can tell that the “economy” has gotten worse in America. Tracey says that high school parents will be expecting their teens to go out and get summer jobs once school leaves out in about a month. However, she says her child went through this exact scenario last year: “There are hardly any jobs for high school students anymore.”
As Tracey points out, people are so incredibly desperate to find work that even school summer jobs are now filled with adults. People with Master’s Degrees have no choice but to work at fast-food restaurants due to the current economy. On top of that, fast food places are becoming automated, making it less necessary to fill positions with actual people.
Tracey also said that the process for hiring teens is different than when she was a teenager. With the ability to easily apply online, it’s difficult for a teenager to be chosen. Back when she was a teen, she said you always dropped off paper applications and “you could start that day.”
The video continues to draw attention as people share their opinions on this pressing matter, sparking discussion among many commenters who agree with Tracey and others who share varying perspectives.
One commenter stated, “I have a PhD and I got rejected from Michael’s.” Another shared, “I have 3 degrees and 15 years of experience. 900 apps. ZERO.” As one commenter added, “I’ve worked at the grocery store for 3 years with a Master’s because there’s simply nothing else.”
Plenty more shared their opinions on the economy, including fears that it could get worse from here.
