Despite Sony seemingly fighting against fate, the Uncharted movie is currently in development. The production looked like it was about to begin in July, though COVID-19 has definitely complicated things. But Sony is no stranger to delays when it comes to Uncharted. The studio’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s acclaimed series has been in some form of development for close to 11 years. Now, with every update, eager fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing it’s actually, finally happening.
This update comes via Uncharted protagonist Nathan Drake’s voice actor, Nolan North. North visited the set and shared a handful of pictures on Twitter, though Naughty Dog also shared the same pictures. The first photo of North and movie Drake, Tom Holland, was accompanied by North’s enthusiasm. “Like looking into a mirror! Proud to have Tom Holland continuing the Drake legacy! Absolutely smashing it! Thanks for the set visit!!”
The other two photos are of likely important props to the film’s story. One shows an artifact hiding in a crypt that looks like the bejeweled hilt of an ancient sword. The other, as Polygon pointed out, shows an open copy of The Life of Ferdinand Magellan and the First Circumnavigation of the Globe. Francis Henry Hill Guillemard released the book in 1890, which hints towards the movie’s plot. Additionally, Tom Holland later took to Instagram to post a picture of himself as Nathan Drake.
While North states this was purely a set visit, it wouldn’t be surprising for the star of the Uncharted games to pop up somewhere in a cameo. As Polygon points out, it looks like production is currently taking place outside Valencia, Spain. But unofficial set photos from September showed part of the film would be set in Berlin as well.
The Uncharted movie stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his partner and father figure, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. It also stars Antonio Banderas, Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), and Sophia Ali (Grey’s Anatomy). It is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Venom) and will release on July 16th, 2021.
