Universal Pictures has canceled the release of the upcoming movie The Hunt after criticism from political parties and the effects of the recent mass shootings in America.
The Hunt is described as a satire thriller that follows twelve strangers that are being hunted down by a group of wealthy elites. The trailer highlights the violence and some of the stars holding assault rifles and other weapons. The Hunt received backlash from conservative parties, including President Trump. While he didn’t mention the movie, it’s believed that this is the film he was talking about. Over two tweets, Trump tweeted
Liberal Hollywood is Racist at the highest level, and with great Anger and Hate! They like to call themselves “Elite,” but they are not Elite. In fact, it is often the people that they so strongly oppose that are actually the Elite. The movie coming out is made in order….

Initially, Universal suspended the marketing campaign, but it looks like the studio decided to drop the film from its September 27 release date. According to a report from Variety, the decision came from both the studio and the filmmakers.
In a statement, Universal said,
“While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for The Hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film. We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the time to release this film.”
It is not known if Universal plans on releasing The Hunt down the road or if it will see a theatrical release or come to streaming services.
The Hunt stars Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby), and Emma Roberts (We’re the Millers). Damon Lindelof (Lost) co-wrote the movie with Craig Zobel directing.
