A Missouri driver shared a heartbreaking story online after a newly purchased car was destroyed less than 48 hours after being brought home during a severe hailstorm. The storm reportedly caused major damage to the family’s property, including both vehicles, parts of their home, and a recently built chicken coop. The story quickly drew attention online as many people reacted to the family’s sudden loss and the scale of the storm damage.

Finally got my own car! It was destroyed less that 48 hours later.

The story was posted on Reddit’s popular subreddit r/mildlyinfuriating, where it quickly gained traction. The post received more than 7,000 upvotes and over 400 comments from users reacting to the photos and details shared by the Missouri resident. Many commenters expressed sympathy after seeing images of shattered windshields, heavily damaged vehicles, and unusually large hailstones that the family said were roughly the size of baseballs or grapefruits.

According to the driver, the family had spent the last eight years sharing a single vehicle before finally being able to purchase another car. The owner explained that they had driven the car home on Saturday and were excited to finally have more reliable transportation. However, by Monday morning, a powerful hailstorm swept through the area and severely damaged the vehicle.

Photos shared in the post showed both the front and rear windshields completely shattered. The resident also claimed the car would no longer start after the storm. Additional images showed major dents and broken glass on the spouse’s vehicle, while another photo showed the family’s son holding several massive hailstones collected after the storm passed.

The damage reportedly extended far beyond the vehicles. The driver said the family’s roof and siding were badly hit during the storm, while a newly installed air conditioning unit and a chicken coop built only two months earlier were also damaged. The family added that the hailstorm affected the chickens housed inside the coop. According to the resident, 11 out of 12 chickens survived, though one later died, which they believe may have been caused by stress and exposure to moisture after the coop was damaged.

Missouri Driver’s Story Shocks Reddit Users

Many internet users said they were shocked by both the damage and the size of the hailstones shown in the photos. Others called the situation an extreme case of bad luck. “How did you piss Mother Nature off?” one user joked.

Another commenter expressed disbelief at the hail itself, writing, “I feel like hail has to be one of the craziest things in nature. Like yeah, we have rain, fluffy snowflakes, and wind. But giant balls of ice too? That’s insane.” Some users also wondered whether increasingly severe hailstorms could eventually lead insurance companies to raise premium prices in affected areas.

In the comments, the driver clarified that both vehicles only carried liability insurance because the family usually drove older cars. The newly purchased vehicle reportedly cost around $1,600. While the resident said homeowner’s insurance may help cover repairs to the house, they do not expect reimbursement for the damage to either vehicle.

The post quickly became a viral example of how fast severe weather can turn an exciting milestone into a costly disaster. For many readers, the story was both shocking and deeply unfortunate.
