A woman in Utah broke down a set of beliefs she grew up with as a Mormon. Now, no longer a believer, she finds them hard to digest, including the belief that Jesus and Satan, the latter also known as the Devil, were brothers.
The woman, whose name is Sloan, shared her clip on TikTok. She usually shares her thoughts on a variety of topics, including recent viral clips related to World War II and other historical events. Her latest clip, however, went viral in a day, garnering 548,900 views, 96,200 likes, and over 1,000 comments.
The Utah woman, as seen in the clip, began sharing some Mormon beliefs she believed were normal and common in Christianity, but actually aren’t.
“We were taught that Jesus and Satan were brothers,” Sloan said, sharing the first Mormon belief. “I thought that all Christians thought that. I thought that was just like a thing. Apparently not.“
Other Beliefs
The second belief, according to Sloan, was that there are “three levels of heaven,” also known as kingdoms: the telestial, the terrestrial, and the celestial. Depending on “how devoted to Mormonism you were,” she detailed, one would be assigned to a specific kingdom.
This “devotion,” Sloan continued, also depended on whether one tithed to the church. This means giving away a tenth of one’s income. She called Mormonism a “corporation,” as a result.
Another teaching, according to her, was that being “holier” translated to having “lighter skin.” Sloan said, mainly, the belief dictated that Native Americans could be turned “White” if they converted.
In addition, the Utah woman also said that Mormonism prohibited interracial relationships, a teaching that has since been disavowed by the church. She said, “Mixing your seed with a non-White person was punishable by death.”
After mentioning several other rituals, including wearing garments and doing baptisms for the dead, the clip ended.
Reactions And Debate
The video sparked multiple responses online. Some viewers were in total disbelief after hearing some of the teachings Sloan mentioned. One viewer said, “This sounds like a fan fiction.” Another one added, “I’m an atheist, but BROTHERS?“
Other viewers defended some of the teachings, including the “brothers” one. This sparked passionate debates in the comments, with one user asking, “Have you ever read the Bible?” while another said, “That’s heresy.”
In another clip, Sloan said that she no longer believes in God. She, however, still goes to church on Sundays, although she is not allowed in the temple, as she no longer tithes.
