Virginia Sen. Mark Warner Raked Over Voter ID Claim After ABC Host Fact-Checks Him Live: ‘Called Out to His Face’

That got awkward fast

Virginia Sen. Mark Warner drew attention during an ABC interview about photo identification requirements for voting. Warner said Virginia requires photo identification, but the host corrected that claim live. Warner then acknowledged that voters may sign an affidavit without presenting an accepted form of identification.

ABC: "You and every other Democrat oppose the SAVE America Act… requiring photo ID to register to vote, is this Democrats should get behind?"

WARNER: “In Virginia, we have voter ID and photo ID!”

The X clip captured the exchange over whether photo identification should become a national voting standard.

The host asked whether Democrats should support requiring photo identification to register and vote. He said “80-some percent” of Americans and 71 percent of Democrats favored the requirement. Warner replied, “In Virginia, we have voter ID and photo ID.” The host responded, “That’s actually not the case,” and described Virginia’s accepted identification options.

The host said voters could sign an affidavit when they lacked accepted identification. Warner agreed, saying, “You can sign an affidavit.” The host then said photo identification was therefore not required. Warner said affidavit ballots could face later challenges and states accept different documents.

When asked about a national rule, Warner supported government-stamped photo identification. He said some states accept NRA gun licenses but reject student identification.

The exchange drew sharp criticism and renewed debate over voter identification and proof-of-citizenship requirements.

One user wrote, “Warner literally just tried to lie to the host, and got corrected on the spot.” Another said, “So comfortable lying. Even when called out to his face…”

A separate response stated, “He either knew he was lying and didn’t expect to be corrected or is incompetent and doesn’t know his own state.” Another added, “Wow! This is a welcome change. [ABC] didn’t let him get away with lying.”

Other responses argued that the SAVE Act goes beyond ordinary photo identification requirements. One wrote, “Stop conflating voter ID with the SAVE act. SAVE requires proof of citizenship. Thats a photo ID, birth cert & if your name has changed, all supporting docs, certified.”

Another stated, “Yeah the SAVE act is a voter suppression bill not voter ID. [the host] should point out the hurdles married women will have to go through to register to vote bc of their name change under this bill.”

The exchange left the distinction between voter ID requirements and proof-of-citizenship legislation at the center of the dispute.
