The VR realm is about to gain a Western flair with the announcement of Cold Iron. The game takes on the age-old gun fight popularized in Clint Eastwood movies and old classic games like Law of the West. Developed by Catch & Release, LLC out of North Carolina, Cold Iron finds you hunting down your father’s killer. At you side will be Dad’s pistol that has been possessed thanks to a mysterious gunsmith.

Each enemy you duel promises to be a completely different experience. Perhaps that is why the developers harken to an NES classic when they describe the gameplay.

Imagine if Punch-Out!! married Stranger Things and they honeymooned in Westworld

While the game is inspired by the old west the supernatural element will mean that new worlds will be available to explore. That being said at its core the game is a puzzle shooter requiring not just speed and a steady hand but some smarts as well. The developers also take pains to emphasize that Cold Iron is not a wave shooter game. For one, ever bullet counts so the spray and pray shooting method from some other games won’t cut the mustard. They also state that the gameplay has been designed from the ground up and was re-imagined three times before they felt they had it right.

In a final bid to describe what the gameplay and experience entail, Catch & Release, LLC sums up the experience with a volley of comparisons. “If you enjoy the boss rush gameplay of Cuphead, the white-knuckled western aesthetic of Red Dead Redemption, the tight gunplay of Arizona Sunshine and Raw Data, and the magic and mystery of The Dark Tower, then it’s time to meet Cold Iron.” Cold Iron will release January 30, 2018, and be available on PlayStation VR, Oculus Touch and HTC Vive.
