Warframe 1999 is finally here and a bit early since most of us expected it to drop sometime near Christmas week, but Christmas came early. Now, for those of you who are confused as to what Warframe 1999 might be, we’ve prepared a lore and story guide to help you dive in and appreciate this new addition to Warframe.

What is Warframe 1999?

Again, to be clear, Warframe 1999 is not a sequel, it’s an expansion or update of the existing Warframe game. Since Warframe is a free-to-play game, Warframe 1999 is also a free update and will be applied automatically as soon as you open the game right now regardless of the platform.

Warframe 1999 adds the following to the game:

  • New open region
  • A new friendly faction (The Hex)
  • New enemies and enemy factions/types
  • New game modes, mechanics, and features
  • A new quest involving said factions, new features, and a new region
  • Romance-able characters for the new faction
  • New weapons
  • New Warframes
  • New skins for weapons and Warframes
  • Plot development for Warframe’s overall lore

There’s more, but that’s the gist. However, there are limitations to accessing Warframe 1999, and newbies to Warframe can’t just jump in. The Warframe 1999 is mainly for veterans or old players of Warframe but newbies can still catch up.

How to Play Warframe 1999

There are prerequisites before you’re able to play Warframe 1999. Even veterans or old Warframe players can’t just start the quest right away. This is the main requirement:

  • Complete all the Main Quests

If you’re a newbie wanting to catch up, you can go to the Codex section of your Orbiter in-game and click on the Quests tab. After that, click on Main Quests and you’ll be able to see what you need to complete to access Warframe 1999.

Take note that the Warframe 1999 quest can last from one hour to two hours during which you can’t access any other feature of the game. You’ll be stuck in the Warframe 1999 region of Höllvania until you finish the quest. So, plan ahead and think about your other engagements in-game and offline before committing.

As for those who want to catch up or brush up on their Warframe lore, thankfully, Warframe 1999 takes place in the same timeline but in the distant past, existing as a looping pocket of time. For the most part, you can think of it as a separate prequel story. Still, it’s connected to the main Warframe lore.

It begins during the hunt for a mysterious man named Albrecht Entrati who is responsible for many of the catastrophes and events in Warframe. Somehow, your main character in Warframe managed to track down Albrecht Entrati to another dimension where Earth is still at the end of the year 1999, specifically in a region called Höllvania.

Turns out Höllvania has its own set of problems. A military faction named Scaldra is imposing martial law. Additionally, there’s a zombie-like infestation called Techrot that turns the infected into mindless horde monsters.

It’s up to The Hex (Warframe progenitors) and its six members (with your help) to set things straight before their pocket reality collapses under the weight of its catastrophes — something Albrecht Entrati might have contributed to.

Of course, nothing’s stopping you from having fun along the way.
