After a lengthy period in the shadows, Warner Bros Montreal has emerged to confirm that they are indeed working on a DC Comics video game. Details are scarce now, and this is the first news the company has released since December 2018. At that time, the company announced two games in development.

A developer from WB Montreal responded to a fan who asked for details about the project on Twitter. The fan’s tweet asked for information regarding what they are currently (or planning to) work on. Their developer’s response was brief but they said that they are working with a “DC franchise.”

Warner Bros. Montreal History

Warner Bros Montreal is a subsidiary of Warner Bros Interactive, formed in 2010. While the Canadian studio has been around for nearly 10 years now, they do not boast a wealth of video game credits. Batman: Arkham City – Armored Edition was their first project which released in 2012. 2013 saw the release of Batman: Arkham Origins, which many saw as their big break. The game received mixed reviews, with critics praising the larger open-world map but negatively commenting on the lack of change from previous Arkham games. Origins is the only Arkham title to feature a multiplayer mode, with two players as Batman and Robin fighting thugs led by Joker and Bane. Reviewers reacted poorly to the new game mode, marking it as unnecessary for a primarily single-player series. WB Montreal’s last development was Batgirl: A Matter of Family, a DLC pack for Batman: Arkham Knight.

Warner Bros Montreal has not specified which DC franchise they are developing into a game. With a giant library of DC characters and storylines to choose from, the studio has a wide range of possibilities. The Batman: Arkham series showed gamers that comic book-based video games can combine a deep narrative with polished gameplay. Will the new project(s) focus on a solo hero? With the release of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, perhaps WB Montreal will tackle the Justice League Heroes formula again? What characters are you excited to see in a new adventure?
