Washington, D.C. Hearing Turns Tense as Adam Schiff Presses Todd Blanche Over Trump IRS Settlement: ‘Who Wrote It?’

That’s not what was asked

A video was posted to the social media platform X by Senator Adam Schiff that reveals that Acting General Attorney Todd Blanche admitted to not knowing who wrote the settlement that bans the IRS from taking action against President Donald Trump over old tax returns during a hearing in Washington, D.C.

While some commenters felt that the question of who wrote the actual document has little to no significance, others argued that Blanche was using wordplay to mask the answer to the question being asked of him.

In the short video above, you can see that Senator Adam Schiff is seated with a large copy of the document in question printed behind him. He points at the document and directs his question at Todd Blanche, saying, “Did you write this language?“

By this, he means the specific wording in the document itself, which states that the IRS cannot take action against the President for old tax returns. Blanche quickly defends himself, saying, “You have to use the facts, though. He hasn’t filed taxes yet. So when he files taxes, there’s no protection based on this agreement.”

In this same hearing, Blanche was also asked, “So, for a tax return filed this year for last year, for the billions he made, there is no tax liability, even if he cheats on his taxes or his kids do, or his business does, he is absolved of that further potential liability?” The answer used above was also his response to this question.

After hearing his response, Schiff asked the question again, asking Blanche for a different response. Blanche responded with, “Did I write the—did I type it up myself? No.” Because that’s not what was asked of him, Schiff asked the question a third time, which was answered, “No.”

Comments and Reactions to Todd Blanche Not Knowing Who Wrote Trump IRS Settlement

Various commenters were quick to point fingers at Todd Blanche’s response concerning whether he typed the document himself. One person wrote, “He kept on saying he doesn’t know who typed it. That has nothing to do with whether or not he knows who either authored or dictated it. Wish you would’ve pressed him about that.“

Similarly, another person wrote, “He didn’t say he didn’t know who WROTE it. He carefully changed the word you used to say he didn’t know who TYPED it, pretending that’s what you were asking. Athough in high school English, when asked “Who wrote “1984?” he’d have raised his hand: “Like, who TYPESET it?” 🙄“

As the video continues to go viral on X, more commenters are continuing to leave their opinions and frustrations in the comments below.
