Viral rapper Lil Nas X sparked a heated online debate after celebrating Democrats’ sweeping victories in the 2026 midterm elections with a provocative abortion joke that quickly drew criticism from conservative social media users. While the California-based rapper’s celebratory remarks might have been a joke, they nevertheless made certain online users worried.
Montero Lamar Hill, better known by his stage name Lil Nas X, shared the all-caps joke on November 4, saying, “WE ALL GETTING ABORTIONS TONIGHT!” The post appeared as Democrats celebrated major electoral gains, including victories that handed the party control of both chambers of Congress.
Lil Nas X’s tongue-in-cheek celebration quickly attracted attention, with reactions ranging from enthusiastic support to accusations that he was making light of unborn children’s lives. The reaction was particularly fierce among users who viewed the message as disrespectful toward religious beliefs and opposition to abortion.
“Just odd to celebrate death,” one commenter wrote, while another criticized the rapper’s apparent enthusiasm, saying, “This dude saying ‘we getting abortions’.” Others questioned the connection between the election results and abortion access.
One user argued that Democrats would prioritize restricting gun ownership while supporting abortion rights, writing, “Democrats will say ban guns to save children then get an abortion.” Another simply declared, “Unborn children’s lives matter,” alongside Christian and American flag emojis.
Lil Nas X’s Post Divides Social Media
However, not everyone interpreted the post as a serious political statement. Some users defended the rapper’s dark humor, with one commenter pointing out, “Yall heard of a joke before yall thought yall liked dark humor.” Others joined in with exaggerated jokes of their own. One X user quipped, “I’m getting an abortion AFTER the baby is born!” Another claimed to have just had “three boybortions.”
The reactions reflected the wider divide over abortion rights, which remained a major political issue heading into the midterms. Hill has notably built much of his public persona around provocative humor, boundary-pushing performances, and unapologetic LGBTQ representation. An openly gay artist, Lil Nas X has frequently used his music and public appearances to challenge expectations surrounding sexuality, masculinity, and religion.
His 2021 “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” music video attracted widespread backlash for its religious imagery, particularly a scene depicting the rapper descending into hell and giving Satan a lap dance. His collaboration with MSCHF on controversial Satan-themed sneakers that same year also generated headlines and a legal dispute with Nike.
Those controversies have helped establish his reputation for courting attention through deliberately provocative material. This time, his abortion joke arrived against the backdrop of a major Democratic victory.
The party’s takeover of both the House and Senate marks a significant political shift, potentially giving Democrats greater leverage over the legislative agenda during the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term. It’s not clear whether Lil Nas X intended his post as political commentary or simply another exercise in internet trolling; still, it succeeded in generating a fierce abortion debate.
