Like other classes in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Monk can use certain weapons and give them a Dexterity boost for a specific build. The Monk is the go-to if you want to hit opponents like a Fighter but add some flair and finesse to it. There is a strong emphasis on Dexterity with Monks alongside Wisdom. When in battle, they can use a surprising amount of different weapons. Your weapon proficiency can change, too, based on the race you choose and if you have points in other classes. We’ll touch on all the weapons you can possibly use as a Monk so you can craft the right build.
Monk Weapon Proficiency in Baldur’s Gate 3
As you craft your Monk build in Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s much to consider. From Equipment to Skills, plenty goes into creating the best build possible. Weapons can play a major role in that too, so for the Monk in Baldur’s Gate 3, you want to consider what you’ll go into battle with.
Of course, you can always take the simpler approach and use Unarmed Strikes. Monks can easily become incredibly potent ninjas in Baldur’s Gate 3 with their Spell usage and martial arts abilities. But if you do plan on using weapons, you’ll need to understand what a Monk can handle.
At the base level, the Monk class and subclasses are proficient with these types of weapons:
- Simple Weapon
- Shortsword
However, you can expand that based on the race you choose. For instance, if you play a Drow Monk, the Drow race naturally has proficiency with Rapier and Hand Crossbows. So, your Drow Monk can wield the Martial Weapon of Rapiers in addition to Simple Weapons in Baldur’s Gate 3.
The only caveat is that they cannot wield Heavy or Two-Handed weapons. So, although your Drow has Hand Crossbow proficiency, Monks cannot fight with Two-Handed weapons.
You can score points in other classes throughout the game, too. It can allow the Monk to carry other weapons and get the best of both worlds. A Monk swinging around a Warhammer or a Battleaxe, thanks to a Barbarian point, deals heavy blows but maintains a Dexterity boost that gives you a stronger chance at landing any hit.

- Martial Weapons:
