Whipseey and the Lost Atlas releases today from Blowfish Studios. It’s an action platformer inspired by retro gaming.

Whipseey and the lost Atlas puts the player in control of Alax, a young boy lost in a strange world. He’s been transformed into a magical creature named Whipseey and must solve the mystery of the lost Atlas. Only when the mystery is solved can he revert to his true form and return home.

Whipseey is able to leap, whip, and hover through handcrafted levels. The world is populated with adorable enemies and dangerous hazards.  Whipseey can defeat his enemies with his trusted whip, latch onto swing posts, and hover in the air.

The game takes inspiration from platformers of the past, but especially Super Mario World from the SNES. For instance, there is a very similar esthetic and all-around feel as the popular Nintendo classic.

According to developer Daniel Ramirex,

“Releasing Whipseey is a dream come true. It’s been an amazing ride creating a platformer that harkens back to the classics we grew up spending hours playing. If you enjoy my retro platformer half as much as I did developing it, I know you are in for a treat.”

Whipseey is brought to life with art from Luftrauser sartist Roy Nathan De Groot. The platformer also contains a catchy and original soundtrack that harkens back to some serious old school gaming.

At first glance, the level design doesn’t seem to be all that challenging but looks can be deceiving. If you like retro platformers, this might just be the game for you. It’s always great to see someone keeping the past alive even though technology continues to improve.

Whipseey and the Lost Atlas arrives today on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam for Windows PC. The game retails for $5.99 USD and has support for several languages in a post-launch update.
