Though there have been quite a few Whitney Houston life stories told in film, a new biopic called I Wanna Dance With Somebody is coming to theaters on December 21st, and ahead of the film’s release, an official trailer has hit the internet.
The film stars Naomi Ackie and Kasi Lemmons, who also directed 2019’s Harriet and the 1997 cult classic Eve’s Bayou, directed it. Anthony McCarten, who wrote the screenplay for Bohemian Rhapsody, wrote the script for I Wanna Dance With Somebody. In an interview with People Magazine, Naomi Ackie said, “Fans can expect to see her life like we see our own. Ups and downs, triumphs and disappointments, all of it mixing together to make up a life.”
Despite seeing this new trailer, many fans of the late singer have expressed a disinterest in another Whitney Houston biopic. However, this one seems worthy of her legacy. The film has a talented team behind it, so people are still hopeful.

Of course, Naomi Ackie plays Whitney Houston in the film. She’s been in quite a few notable roles, with two Star Wars films perhaps being the biggest. Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston’s former husband, is played by Ashton Sanders. He was in 2016’s Moonlight and both Equalizer movies. Also on the cast is Stanley Tucci. The film icon plays legendary record executive Clive Davis. Clive Davis discovered and signed Whitney to her first record deal. Clive was instrumental throughout her long career.
I Wanna Dance With Somebody is a musical biopic about Whitney Houston. This means there should be a soundtrack that accompanies the film. If the success of the recent biopic Elvis is any indicator, this new Whitney Houston film should be a success. The world has seen her story many times, but she’s considered one of the greatest singers of all time, so there is still an audience for a Whitney Houston film. The movie is from Sony Pictures.
