Guardians of The Galaxy 3 has just been released in theatres, and it’s reckoned to be one of the best MCU movies since Phase 4. However, the first post-credit scene of this movie contains some very important details about a new character in Guardians 3 who’s going to have a very important role later in the MCU. Here’s everything you need to know about Phyla in Guardians of The Galaxy 3.
Spoiler Alert: The following content spoils the story of the Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Phyla Origins Story Explained
(Updated on September 30, 2024 – updated links and format)
Phyla is the new character seen in the first post-credit scene of Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3. She’s a female, presumably from the ones that the Guardians saved after defeating the High Evolutionary. However, this character has secret powers that are yet to be fully revealed, and we only see the tip of the iceberg at the end of the movie.
Phyla-Vell’s Origin and Relation to The MCU Version
Captain Marvel has been the mantle for many characters in the Marvel Comics. The first character to hold on to this mantle was Mar-Vell. A Kree from the Pink Kree race, appearing first in the Marvel Super-Heroes #12 comic back in 1967. However, Carol Danvers, a human pilot from Earth, follows the way to be the second Captain Marvel in comics.
This tradition continues, and Genis-Vell, Mar-Vell’s son, takes the next step as the 3rd Captain Marvel. Mar-Vell and an Eternal called Elysius gave born to this child, but not in a traditional way. Elysius used Mar-Vell’s DNA to create Genis and did it again to create Phyla. Phyla-Vell first appeared in the Captain Marvel #5 comic in 2003.
As Phyla was born to an Eternal and a super-powered Kree, she was stronger than her parents, just like her brother Genis. She has the ability to manipulate energy and shoot photon blasts like a Captain Marvel should. But maybe the most important thing about her powers is the fact that she can fly with the speed of light without needing any rest or hydration. Sounds familiar?! Kind of the same thing that was heard about Phyla in the Guardians of The Galaxy 3 movie.
How Is Phyla in Guardians of The Galaxy 3 Similar To The Comic Version?
High Evolutionary was the main antagonist of the Guardians of The Galaxy 3. His purpose was to create a perfect society where the people he created lived in the order he wanted. He is presumed to be a god for creating different races and species. However, it seems like he’s the one to create Phyla in the MCU.
After destroying Counter-Earth, High Evolutionary intends to create yet another race. We see a bunch of little girls and kids playing around, but none of them are as intelligent as Rocket Raccoon for High Evolutionary to call it a success. However, there’s one girl among these subjects that we see running in a loop without rest.
High Evolutionary’s assistant states that this subject can run for weeks and doesn’t need food or hydration. Which quickly gives us a hint about her identity. This is, in fact, Phyla’s first appearance in the Guardians of The Galaxy 3 movie. We don’t see this new character use her powers in the movie’s action scenes. But as it turns out, she has passed the test to become a Guardian of The Galaxy by the end of this film.

Will Gamora Return to MCU After Guardians of The Galaxy 3?
There seems to be a time jump in the first post-credit scene, as Groot is seen to be bigger and stronger. And then, when the Guardians get ready for a battle, Phyla wields her powers by flying and gathering energy around her fists. This is pretty similar to what we saw in Marvel Comics as well, but the similarity for Phyla in Guardians of The Galaxy 3 and comics is with how she’s born.
Just like in the comics, Phyla is not born in a traditional way in the MCU. Both her parents in comics and High Evolutionary in the MCU create Phyla using a certain DNA. However, no details are available on how High Evolutionary found a DNA to create his Kree test subjects, and it’s not even shown whether Phyla is considered a Kree or not in the MCU.
The Future of Phyla in The MCU
Phyla is teased as a new character in Guardians of The Galaxy 3 just to show how important she will be in future MCU titles. The movies like Avengers: Kang’s Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars are where we’ll probably see Phyla again. But before that, there might be hints and details about this character in other related movies like Captain Marvel 2 or Secret Invasion Disney Plus Series.
It’s not known how she will replace Captain Marvel in the MCU. As we know now, Marvel Studios does not recreate the exact stories of Marvel Comics as live-action adaptations. Marvel Studios’ writers change the narratives to fit the stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it is evident that a new team of younger heroes is coming to this universe, and Phyla is among them. Along with Phyla, Love from Thor 4, America Chavez, Ms. Marvel, and Riri Willams are all considered to have vital roles in Phases 5 and 6 of the MCU.
