Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 features many side missions and quests. One of these sidequests has Spider-Man teamed up with Captain Yuri Watanabe from the first game. Watanabe has taken up the superhero identity of the Wraith and is going after The Flame cult in Spider-Man 2. The Flame’s leader has deep ties to Spider-Man lore and the supervillain Carnage, foreshadowing potential events after Spider-Man 2.

The Flame’s goal in Spider-Man 2 is to bring about the Crimson Hour and burn away everyone else. The cult’s enigmatic leader is only known as “The Flame,” confusingly meaning The Flame leads The Flame. However, the final quest in this side story brings to light the leader’s true identity. The cult tricks superheroes into derailing an Oscorp train to save people from a burning building. This puts both heroes trapped under rubble, allowing the group to steal a piece of the black Symbiote from the train.

The leader then speaks to Spidey, saying:

And when the Crimson Hour rolls over this earth, it shall bring truth, judgment, and Carnage.

The Flame

With the leader’s red hair and burned skin that makes his appearance look red, it’s apparent that The Flame is destined to become the Spider-Man supervillain, Carnage. Watanabe would later share with Spidey that Cletus Kasady is one of The Flame’s aliases. Comic fans will recognize Kasady as Carnage’s alter ego.

Cletus Kasady is a renowned serial killer and ends up occupying a cell next to Eddie Brock, aka Venom. The Venom Symbiote spawns a red offspring, and the new Symbiote bonds with Kasady, creating Carnage. Whereas Venom has morals and rules to follow, Carnage is nothing but chaos and violence. Venom is pure black, while Carnage is blood red. Kasady has led his own cult in the comics called the Cult of Knull, an evil group that worships the King of Black and the dark god of the Symbiote.

To start The Flame side missions in Spider-Man 2, you must finish Main Quest 6, Amends. The first mission will become available to you, and from there, complete the quest in the following order.

  • Where Have You Been?
  • Everything Burns
  • I Knew You Had It In You
  • It Was Meant For Me

Completing all four quests will earn you the Crimson Hour Trophy. Kasady and the rest of the cult will likely return to cause a little bit of Carnage in the follow-up installment of Spider-Man 2.
