When the trailer for TLC’s Seeking Brother Husband dropped, it teased a lot of drama and insights into the lives of four couples at different stages of their polyandrous relationships — with the common denominator being that all four women were looking to bring in new brother-husbands into their homes.
Kenya Stevens, one of the seemingly more experienced women in the lifestyle, features on the show with her husbands, Carl Stevens and Tiger. The Stevens have been married for 30 years and welcomed brother husband Time 10 years ago, after agreeing to open their marriage to other partners. While speaking to Rolling Stone before the show’s premiere, Kenya clearly distinguishes between polyandry and polygamy. She said:
“Women are not similar to men who set up poly lifestyles. We have our own way of doing it, and it’s freedom-based and equitable.”
Kenya later explains that unlike the poly relationship explored on Sister Wives, where the wives were restricted to Kody, women set up their poly relationships giving their men the freedom to have other partners. However, this is in contrast to the series title, which suggested the women are seeking “husbands’ not just sexual partners. In the promo clip, Kenya clearly defined polyandry as “the practice of one woman having multiple husbands.”
The clip then cuts to her alongside her two husbands in matching white outfits as she declares, “I have two husbands who love me!” While the latter statement may be true, fans later find out that Carl is also married to someone else. This revelation and other scenarios playing out with some other couples have left viewers somewhat disillusioned with the show. On Reddit, fans have already begun to air their discontent after only a few weeks of airing. Many fans have lost the initial excitement of the show’s announcement and have dubbed the show’s title as misleading.
Seeking Brother Husband Fans Feel The Series is Misleading
Since TLC’s Seeking Brother Husband began airing on March 26, viewers have ripped the show apart, with many of them finding some of the scenes from the series cringeworthy. Ahead of the premiere, TLC’s build-up for the show was well-received by fans, and there was genuine eagerness for the season to start.
Fans were excited that they weren’t just getting one but four couples to watch and probably learn a few things from. However, the first few episodes have disappointed many fans. An enraged Reddit user, BitchFace4You, recently took to the platform to start a thread about the show. The OP described the show as “one of the most bizarre shows” and added, “Literally everything about the show is cringe.“
Most Seeking Brother Husband fans slammed the network for a misleading title that painted a different picture. One fan, blackthrowawaynj, was even generous enough to suggest a new title for the show. The user wrote,
“Seeking Male Fuck Buddy…. because my husband is not interested in me and for some weird reason or financial, he doesn’t want to leave the relationship.”
Many Redditors agreed that the women seem to have no genuine interest in finding new husbands. They noted how it was more of an open marriage, especially on the women’s side. The fans believe that the women on the show have boring marriages and need an excuse to openly cheat without any consequences.
Some fans pointed at Elisa as a prime example of the show’s misleading plot. While Elisa has vehemently championed the polyandrous lifestyle, her antics since the show premiered gravitated towards sex as a big motivation for her. One particular user, Adethia, said,
“Most of the guys date others too, so it’s just totally open marriages. Elisa looks like a huge POS that just wants to fuck other guys.”
Fans Think The Ladies Just Want Fame
As the conversations continued on Reddit, many fans drew some disparities between the show and Sister Wives. The users noted how Kody always held on to some deeply religious and spiritual beliefs in polygamy. In contrast, the women in Seeking Brother Husband have no deeper connection with polyandry.
Apart from just being in it for sex, many of the show’s viewers feel the women are crazy for fame and willing to do anything to get it. The fans expressed their doubts over the genuineness of the marriages on the show — with some even insinuating that everything might just be part of one big script.
The fans generally feel that the show has been a big disappointment so far. More importantly, what has put off most of the fans is that many of the show’s scenes have been very cringeworthy to watch. One user, Apprehensive-Tank581 summed up the mood of the fans by writing,
“I tried to watch is twice, and I just can’t follow through with it. It’s too cringe. Please don’t do another season TLC.”
Although some of the cast warned about the bias against women regarding plural marriages, they haven’t done themselves any favors with their antics on the show. Viewers want to see natural relationship dynamics, not what Seeking Brother Husband has offered so far. Hopefully, the latter part of the show will be more authentic to the show’s title.
