Hollywood has watched True Detective stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson grow their careers onscreen while sustaining their real-life bond like brothers. However, the two have revealed the possibility that they could, in fact, be real brothers, despite undergoing no confirmatory DNA test.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Could Be Brothers
During an episode of podcast, Matthew discussed their relationship and their relationship with each other’s family. Matthew referenced their similarities and how their families often mistook one for the other in pictures, thanks to their resemblance. While they may have let this resemblance slide initially, a discovery a few years back made them believe something greater was at play. Matthew recalled:
“In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”
His mom’s comment prompted them to investigate the hidden meaning behind the statement further. Their digging led to the realization that Matthew McConaughey’s mom may have had an affair with Woody Harrelson’s dad to conceive him, making them brothers. Their theory stemmed from how Woody’s dad “was on furlough at the same time” Matthew’s parents were divorcing, which they believed more than a coincidence. Matthew also referenced some “receipts and places out in West Texas,” where a possibly intimate “knew” moment may have occurred.
Why A DNA Test Is Off The Plate
With so many facts pointing at their brotherhood, one would wonder why Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson won’t just do a DNA test to clear all doubts for good. Matthew explained their failure to do the test stem from his reluctance to accept what may become the life-changing truth. He divulged:
“It’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him? It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
Notably, Woody Harrelson’s father passed away about 16 years back while serving a life sentence for the fatal shooting of Judge Wood Jr. in San Antonio 1979. Until he passed from a heart attack, Woody stayed true to his dad, paying him regular visits in prison. Diane Lou Oswald believed to be Woody’s mom, is still alive and kicking.
Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey’s dad, James Donald McConaughey, who divorced his mom Mary Kathleen McCabe twice and remarried her thrice, passed away due to a heart attack in August 1992. The two had three kids together, including Matthew and his two siblings. Hence, Matthew McConaughey’s hesitance to undergo the DNA test to prove if he and Woody Harrelson are brothers is understandable, especially when the result could topple over the family structure he’s known his whole life.
Whether or not they get to know the truth for sure, the world will get to celebrate their brotherhood and friendship upon the launch of their upcoming Apple TV+ comedy series, Brother From Another Mother.
