A heated exchange during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., is going viral after Texas Rep. Brandon Gill repeatedly demanded a direct answer from Thomas Saenz, president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The dispute centered on whether American taxpayers should fund programs such as Medicaid and Social Security for people in the country illegally, with Gill repeatedly insisting the question required a simple yes-or-no response.

Gill: "Should American taxpayers pay for Medicaid for illegal aliens?" Saenz: "In many circumstances, yes. They should… and Not just American taxpayers, but immigrant taxpayers." The discussion starts when Gill asks the question, “Do you believe American taxpayers should pay for illegal aliens’ access to Medicaid?” Saenz responded that in many cases they should, arguing that immigrants also contribute through taxes Gill then asked a similar question about Social Security and continued pressing for a yes-or-no answer. Saenz counters that there is no immigration-based exemption from paying taxes. Federal law generally restricts undocumented immigrants from accessing most federal public benefits, though some immigrants without legal status still contribute payroll and other taxes.

The video shows the Texas Rep. Gill insisting, “It’s a yes or no question,” while Saenz argued the issue could not be answered with a simple yes or no, leading to a tense back-and-forth that culminates with Gill stating he believes it should not happen and accusing Saenz of avoiding the question due to a “crazy radical open borders agenda.”

Public Responses to the Committee Exchange

Some viewers focused on practical questions about how undocumented immigrants obtain Social Security numbers.

Others zeroed in on fairness and contribution, with one writing: “We believe if you’re paying into a system you should get the benefits of said system… or not be required to pay into it.”

Some commenters argued the exchange reflected broader frustrations with Democratic immigration policies and media coverage.

Another added that hearings like this are ineffective, saying, “All of these hearings are a joke. No one answers the questions, regardless of party affiliation.”

Several commenters argued that undocumented immigrants should not receive taxpayer-funded benefits.

This clip is now part of the bigger online discussion about immigration, taxes, and government benefits. It’s just one more moment in the long-running debate over what American taxpayers should cover.
