Will Smith is getting back to his musical roots. It’s been 19 years since the rapper dropped a new album and 7 years since his last single, but he’s making a sincere return with his new single.
On Friday, Will released “You Can Make It.” The inspirational track features Fridayy and Kanye West’s Sunday Service choir.
Fans Believe Will Smith References “The Slap”
Will Smith seems to reference his Oscar slap moment with Chris Rock on his new song. While sharing messages of solidarity and overcoming hardship, he raps, “Believe me, they tried to bleed Will Smith / In the rearview I see adversity was the gift.“
Of course, the actor faced a lot of adversity when pop culture discussed whether or not he should be canceled for slapping Chris Rock on stage at the Oscars for insulting his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. That is far from the only public adversity he has faced in recent years, however.
Will’s relationship with Jada has also made a fair share of headlines in recent years. There have been a lot of questions of his characters as a husband and father, to the disappointment of someone who has prided himself in taking both titles seriously.
New Music Has Been in the Making for Some Time
Will Smith recently revealed that the new music he’s been working on is the result of nearly two years of experimentation and creation.
This last year and a half, I’ve been in the lab … I have a project that is, you know, without question, the most personal and powerful music that I’ve ever made. So, you know, I’m going to sneak that out on you in a month or so.”
Will Smith, Extra
While he’s been working on his own music, Will has been tremendously supportive of his children’s respective music careers. The proud dad has been seen supporting both Jaden and Willow. The two returned the favor and were in the crowd rooting for their dad when he performed with J. Balvin at Coachella.
