Now, this is a story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air.
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said ‘You’re movin’ with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air’
A few weeks ago, word broke that Married with Children would be getting a reboot. Today, an exciting announcement was made that the legendary show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air will be getting similar treatment. TVLine broke the news regarding the reboot and some important details. Will Smith, the famed star of the show will be doing the actual production of the show (using his production company Overbrook Entertainment). Beyond that, more information will be revealed as time goes forward. One important piece will sadly be missing. James Avery, who played the iconic “Uncle Phil” passed away in 2013. It is unclear as to how this will be addressed or if the show will be entirely different from the Banks family. I can only hope that some of the original cast members reunite in some way. Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton), Karyn Parsons (Hilary), and several other of the cast have been doing various things with limited success.
As I discussed in the Married with Children reveal, a part of me is very fearful about recreating old classics and bringing them into 2015. What made these shows famous back in the day does not necessarily translate to today’s generation. Hopefully Will Smith remembers the soul of what made Fresh Prince an icon.
