The question of whether there will be an Indiana Jones 6 or not is one that has made the rounds since the release of the fifth part of the Indiana Jones movies, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Notably, this fifth part, which saw Harrison’s Indiana on the verge of retirement from his archeological adventures won over a new generation of fandom, spurring increased interest in the movie. With the growing interest, it seems like a no-brainer that a new entry would drop in the near future to meet the growing demand. Or would it?
Will There Be an Indiana Jones 6?
For the million-dollar question, “Will there be an Indiana Jones 6?” the chances of a sixth installment of the adventure film happening are very slim. This is especially true because major stakeholders, actors, and film execs have voiced their opinion on the subject. In April 2023, Harrison Ford confirmed in an interview with Total Film magazine, that the fifth film would be the final one, and his last time playing the fictional professor. He divulged,
“This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character. I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film.”
Speaking to Digital Spy, the actor further explained his reasons for appearing in one more installment of the film. According to him, he wanted to see the conclusion of a character he brought to life decades back, with his advancing age being reflected in the proceedings. He explained,
“We’re coming to the end of Indiana Jones’s time on the planet, and I wanted to see a conclusion of his story that accommodated the reality of his age, and what that effect has on this person that we’ve come to know over the years.”
Despite these confirmations that neither Indiana Jones nor the actor that plays him would be returning, a sequel could be pursued. The latest installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, The Dial of Destiny, introduced a worthy protege who could carry on the adventures should the film seek continuity without Indiana Jones.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character, Helena Shaw, shares many similarities with Indiana, including his knack for adventures and for attracting trouble. A potential sequel could see her pursue more adventures, following in the steps of her predecessor. However, producer Kathleen Kennedy has ruled out that possibility, long before the fifth movie released. In a May 2022 interview, she told Vanity Fair,
“We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn’t a day I wasn’t on set where I wasn’t like, ‘Yes – this is Indiana Jones.'”
As such, it looks like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is indeed the final entry in the franchise, sending Indy off in the style the character so richly deserves.
