The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics began last night as the opening ceremony was broadcasted on Friday, February 4th. Unlike other Olympic games, the Winter Olympics opening ceremony ratings this year fell extremely low. NBC Sports has reported the Beijing Winter Olympics TV ratings to a low of 16 million viewers tuning in to watch the Winter Olympics opening ceremony. This amount of viewers is a massive decrease as 43% fewer people decided to tune in to the 2022 Beijing Opening ceremony than the 28.3 million viewers for the 2018 Winter Olympics. Could viewership also be impaired as the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics run alongside the Super Bowl LVI on February 13th?
Could it be we have “Olympic watching fatigue”? The 2020 Summer Olympics was broadcasted this past summer in 2021. The Tokyo Games was only six months ago as it was postponed from July 2020 to this past July due to the pandemic. The Olympics are such a particular time where cultures and countries worldwide meet and compete with prospects of bringing the gold back home. The Olympics send a wave of hope to many viewers and is such a rare fun spectacle that only happens every other year. I think the fact that we just had the Summer Olympics after a buildup of so much loss from the virus made the Summer Games all the more special. Now just a few months later, we already have the Winter Games, which doesn’t give a lot of time for people to get excited about it again. Yes, it is a whole slew of different sports as it’s winter, but I think the Beijing Winter Olympics TV Ratings will stay low as the Summer Olympics happened recently.
