Respecting another’s boundaries is important in any relationship, yet one couple in Wisconsin didn’t seem to care about that when it came to their adult son. Going by Soenerob on Reddit, the son explained his dilemma on r/Wellthatsucks in a post that included several photos of his home. Walls, window sills, and other areas of the exterior can be seen doused with pesticide, toxic pesticide that he specifically told his parents not to use.
It all began when Soenerob’s parents visited several weeks ago and noticed that his yard had a lot of ants. They wanted to exterminate the ant problem as quickly as possible, but the son was very clear about avoiding pesticides. The reason was that he had two small children, a pet dog, and a vegetable garden. “Instead, I said I would use diatomaceous earth and small bug traps inside,” he explained.
Unfortunately, his parents allegedly opposed his decision and called for an exterminator without his knowledge or permission. According to Soenerob, the pest control technician sprayed everything, including his children’s toys, his garden plants, his door, and anywhere his family would be while outside. “I feel like I can’t use my yard now, and feel violated that my parents couldn’t respect my wishes,” he lamented.
Reddit Condemns the Wisconsin Parents for Exercising Their Parental Authority Despite the Son’s Concerns About Pesticide
The Wisconsin father also shared links in his post describing how harmful the pesticide could be to his home, and Redditors were appalled. “You need to have a conversation with your parents about boundaries,” suggested a user. “I’d be livid,” remarked another. The commenter continued, “Also I’m sorry but your parents sound like those people that want a completely sterile lawn and then say dumb stuff like ‘we never see fireflies anymore!’ as if they’re not the problem.”
Even if the parents are the son’s family, Redditors couldn’t fathom why they would think it is all right to pay for a service on property that isn’t their own without the homeowner’s say. “This isn’t so much about ants as it is about power and control. Some parents have a hard time seeing their adult child as an autonomous and independent decision-maker,” expressed a Reddit user.
Indeed, ultimately, it wasn’t up to the parents to do anything to the son’s house, let alone call an exterminator without his knowing. Whether their intentions were pure or not, they have allegedly now hurt their relationship with him, a decision that might not have been worth sacrificing over several ants.
