Whereas the original Wonder Woman released in 2016 only had one villain in the form of God of War, Ares, Patty Jenkins has gone double with the sequel.
In a recent interview with Total Film, the director explained her decision to use two villains in Wonder Woman 1984. And it turns out, it was a very natural one.
“It turned out that the story was the thing that gave birth to the need for both,” said Jenkins, “It wasn’t that I thought I needed both. Cheetah was the villain that we were focused on having in this movie, but then Max Lord, throughout the history of Wonder Woman comics — he serves a very mechanical purpose, often.”
Pedro Pascal will portray the iconic DC villain, a media businessman, and an entrepreneur who is famous for “infomercials.” The character first appeared in Justice League #1 in May 1987.
Cheetah, on the other hand, is portrayed by SNL and Bridesmaids actress Kristen Wiig. She will play a twin role as she also portrays the character’s alter-ego, the archaeologist Barbara Ann Minerva who befriends Wonder Woman before obtaining her supernatural abilities.
Cheetah has been present a lot earlier in the DC Universe, often being described as Wonder Woman’s arch-nemesis. She debuted in Wonder Woman #6 in Autumn 1943.
Set, as the name states, in 1984, Wonder Woman 1984 will also have Diana reunite with her love interest from the first film, Steve Trevor. Much speculation has arisen as to how Trevor is still alive, considering he apparently perished in an exploding airplane at the end of the first movie. And even had he miraculously survived said events, he’d surely be a lot older than he is depicted in the promotional stills.
