What is Yooka-Laylee? It’s a brand new game by the creative talent behind games like Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country. Together, they merged together to form Playtonic Games and today at 12:00EST, they launched Yooka-Laylee as a Kickstarter project with a funding goal of £175,000.
They met their goal after a mere 40 minutes.
Suffice to say there are gamers who are more than excited to get behind the controller of this spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country. Here’s the official description of the game from its Kickstarter page:
Our new heroes, Yooka (the green bloke with no pants) and Laylee (the wisecracking lady-bat with the big nose) were conceptualised from the ground up for stellar platforming gameplay, created by the same character artist behind the rebooted Donkey Kong family and legendary N64 heroes Banjo and Kazooie.
Using an arsenal of special moves like Yooka’s tongue grapple and Laylee’s tactical sonar blast, players will explore – and expand – gorgeous 3D worlds drawn up by esteemed environment artist Steven Hurst (Banjo-Kazooie series, Viva Pinata) and through skill discover the plethora of delicious collectibles hidden within.
The game certainly looks and sounds like a worthy successor to the enjoyable Banjo series. The project will finish its funding in June, with a tentative release date of October this year.
If further stretch goals are met, players can look forward to a variety of options, including multiplayer, new control options, and additional language translations. Currently there are 46 days left to fund the project, and for as little as $15 donated you will get a Steam copy of the game. Console digital copies cost a donation of $24. Other tiers will reward you with t-shirts, a game soundtrack, and an art book.
As of now Yooka-Laylee has nearly 6,000 backers. Will you be one to donate to the cause? Are you excited for a new platforming game by an experienced developer from other great games like it? Let us know in the comments what you think about this game from Playtonic Games.
