Fans were shocked by the Black Ops 7 reveal, and as always, the hate/love train of Call of Duty is moving faster than ever. The recent leaks about Black Ops 7 Multiplayer gave us a better idea of how the game will bring back big maps for 20v20 combat, and now, Treyarch has taken its marketing a step further by comparing the game to the classic Black Ops 2.
We’re used to getting hyped for Call of Duty titles before release, love them at their first few weeks, and then criticize the hell out of them only to remember how underrated they were a few years later. MWII and MWIII are prime examples of this, and Black Ops 6 will likely follow a similar path in the future. But Black Ops 7? Treyarch is tapping into some deep, nostalgic content for it.
One of the best Call of Duty villains of all time is returning, there are some Zombies teasers about the return of Tranzit and even Mob of The Dead in the trailer, and now Treyarch’s Associate Design Director has said “If you’re a fan of Black Ops 2, especially Black Ops 2 competitive, you’ll have a good time in Black Ops 7.” Just, wow.
This is like bringing back all the good childhood memories we had with Black Ops 2, but there’s a catch. While I’d love to put my heart into the idea that Black Ops 7 will become a masterpiece following BO2’s path, there’s one major issue to address: Call of Duty HQ and its continued meddling with every Call of Duty’s seasonal content over the past couple of years. Bugs, sudden crashes, the game unable to load, you name it. If Black Ops 7 launches with these issues, it won’t be anywhere near Black Ops 2, even if the content is decent.
Now, assuming that Black Ops 7 comes with all the CoD HQ and its bloat gone, it still takes so much to be the same as Black Ops 2. We have been using the same Tactical Sprint and armor system since 2019, and it’s no longer effective. The game’s engine probably won’t be changing completely, and with BO7 coming to 17-year-old hardware – namely, the PS4 and Xbox One – there will be limitations.
