I don’t think they expected that confrontation

When a woman and her sister-in-law experienced unexpected racism at an Oklahoma McDonald’s. While there, they witnessed two teen men harassing a family just for being a different skin tone. She decided she wasn’t about to “stay silent” and confronted the men about it.

Chela (@dankchela) was with her sister-in-law at an Oklahoma McDonald’s when she saw two grown men harassing a family. She said they were “shouting racist insults” every time the family stood up to go to the counter. Chela was shocked by their attitude and actions so she decided to speak up. But doing so made them “turn their hate” toward Chela and her sister-in-law. They told Chela they would “call ICE and get them deported.”

@dankchela

Today my SIL and I were at Mc Donald’s in Tulsa not expecting to witness 2 grown men harassing a family for simply existing. They were shouting racists insults every single time they stood up to go to the counter. I couldn’t stay silent so I spoke up. That’s when they turned their hate towards us. They started calling us beaners and that they were going to call ice and get us deported. A worker told us that these guys had already been banned and to call the police. That’s when I pulled out my phone and started to record. My phone ended up cutting off because my husband called me since my SIL was on the phone trying to get ahold of him. Afterwards the manager came out and told THEM to leave. They were upset at the fact THEY were asked to leave and not us ??? Anyways.. the family thanked us afterwards but they should have NEVER had to experience that in the first place. Racism isn’t an option… IT’S HATE. Staying silent only gives it room to grow. If you see someone being targeted because of the color of their skin or where they’re from speak up if it’s safe to do so. We all deserve to exist without fear of harassment. Enough is enough. #stopracism

Chela starts recording right as she confronts one of the men. She puts the camera on his face and asks him, “You’re gonna deport me?” The man sits, silent, and then finally states, “Get out of my face, bro.” She asks him if he said he was going to have her deported, and he says, “I really don’t care. I’ll [expletive] deport you.” He then laughs while she records both him and the other man with him, who clearly doesn’t want his face on camera.

Chela says that she asked McDonald’s workers about the men, who said they were “banned” from the restaurant and were asked to leave. They told her to call the police on them if she wanted to. The family being harassed by the men thanked Chela for standing up for them. Chela says about the entire incident: “Racism isn’t an option… it’s HATE. Staying silent only gives it room to grow.”

Oklahoma Commenters immediately started sharing their reactions to the racist incident that sparked so much controversy. One commenter recognized one of the young men. She stated, “I have been in classes with the boy in the red shirt and he truly does act the same way at school. I am so sorry you went through this and I’m glad on how you went about the situation. People need to learn that racism is not okay and that there are consequences to their actions.”

Other commenters were appalled by how the Oklahoma teens handled themselves before and after being confronted. One mentioned, “The way they think it’s funny is disgusting.” Another added, “Both of them think it’s funny until it affects their future.” Another stated, “He wouldn’t say that to a grown man.” Commenters continue to share their opinions about how to handle racism and applaud Chela for speaking up in the comments.
