‘You’re Still Buying Beef? What Are You, Royalty?’: North Carolina Shoppers Stunned as Pound of Ground Beef Costs More Than an Hour’s Minimum-Wage

Bring home the bacon

For families across North Carolina, putting dinner on the table is one of those everyday expenses that is getting harder to ignore. Whether it is burgers for the kids, meatloaf for the whole family, or simply trying to stretch the weekly grocery budget a little further, ground beef has long been a relatively straightforward staple. But one North Carolina shopper’s recent trip to the grocery store has put its rising cost into startling perspective: a single pound of ground beef was priced higher than what someone earning the state minimum wage makes in an hour.

The comparison was highlighted by a shopper on the North Carolina subreddit, who shared a photo showing a one-pound package of 80/20 ground chuck priced at $7.99. That is 74 cents more than North Carolina’s current $7.25 hourly minimum wage, meaning someone earning the minimum would make less in an hour — before taxes — than the sticker price of that single package of beef.

The shopper’s experience also comes amid elevated beef prices nationwide. According to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, ground chuck averaged $6.77 per pound across the country in August 2026. More broadly, prices for uncooked ground beef were 7.2% higher than they were a year earlier, showing that families are paying noticeably more for a staple that regularly finds its way onto the dinner table.

There are several reasons families are seeing those higher prices at the meat counter. USDA data shows the U.S. cattle herd has been shrinking for years, while cattle slaughter remains historically low and beef production is expected to decline in both 2026 and 2027. Drought, feed costs, and the lengthy process of rebuilding cattle herds have all contributed to tightening supplies, meaning shoppers may not see significant relief at the grocery store overnight.

For North Carolina families trying to keep grocery bills under control, however, the reasons behind the increase do little to soften the hit at the checkout. The $7.99 package quickly struck a nerve with other shoppers, many of whom shared their own experiences of watching the price of everyday groceries climb.

North Carolina Locals React to the $7.99 Ground Beef

North Carolina shoppers had plenty to say about the price, with some finding a little humor in an increasingly frustrating situation. “You’re still buying beef? What are you, royalty?” one Reddit user joked, while another was taken aback by the price-to-fat ratio, writing, “$8 for 80/20 is wild.” And while some pointed toward Harris Teeter as an expensive place to shop, another resident suggested looking elsewhere might not make a huge difference: “Not by much, even Aldi is close to that.”

For others, however, rising grocery bills have already changed what they put on the dinner table. “We gotta go back to great depression meals,” one person wrote, suggesting using oatmeal and grains to make beef stretch further. Another shared a particularly personal connection to the rising cost: “I’m a single guy without roommates. I just can’t buy beef anymore unless it’s a special occasion. It’s a bummer because my grandparents had a cattle farm and I love beef.”

That idea of stretching meals also brought back memories of how previous generations made food go further during difficult times. “My mom used to stretch meatloaf with Rice Krispies. Now Rice Krispies are too expensive,” another commenter recalled. They added that they now save leftover bread to make breadcrumbs themselves, concluding, “I’ll forever have the Depression meal mindset.”

At the end of the day, it’s about more than one $7.99 package of ground beef. For North Carolina families trying to stretch every grocery dollar, even familiar weeknight meals are becoming harder to afford. Locals may joke about needing to be “royalty” to buy beef, but for many households, the squeeze at the dinner table is very real.
