Game merchandise company and distributor Merchoid is preparing to release a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time themed chess set. The pieces are made from vinyl and feature a metallic finish. Before reading who’s who, try scrolling down and identifying the pieces for yourself, then come back here and see how many you got right. Link and Zelda serve as the king and queen for their side, obviously. Impa appears as the bishops, Epona as the knights, Darunia as rooks, and Navi for the pawns. That’s a lot of listening. Opposing them, you have Ganondorf as the king, Twinrova playing the queen, and iron knuckles filling the role of bishop. Ganondorf’s horse rivals Epona as the evil knights while Armos statues act as rooks. For pawns, the king of evil employs a squad of deku scrubs.

Okay, so how many of these pieces would you be able to identify without already knowing what they were?

The Legend of Zelda chess board measures 16.5 x 10.5 inches. It’s black and green, according to Merchoid, and coated with spot UV finish to make it all shiny. It’s a limited edition item, meaning you’ll have to cut a ton of grass to scrounge up the rupees for it. At $90 a pop, you can bet the scalpers will stop at nothing to get their hands on this thing. So if you’re one of those fans that absolutely must have an Ocarina of Time chess set and who refuses to genuflect to greedy eBayers, you’d best hurry over to Merchoid’s pre-order page while you still can – as of this writing, only six sets are left in stock, and the pre-order window is closing very soon. The set ships next month (April).

Here’s a crazy idea. You know that game where, every time something happens, you take a drink? Well, set up this chess board and turn on Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and every time your opponent takes one of your pieces, you have to do something crazy-dangerous in Breath of the Wild. That is if you can stand to leave the game idle long enough to actually play the chess game at all. Good luck with that.
