Considering Halo 5 isn’t even out yet, it may or may not come as a surprise that 343 is already planning Halo 6. In an upcoming Golden Joysticks Halo 5 special (according to GamesRadar), 343’s Frank O’Connor and Bonnie Ross talk about the future of the series, including talk of a “fictional foundation” for the next 20 years.
“We do kind of know what’s going to happen in the next game pretty well at this point,” said franchise development director Frank O’Connor. “We’re doing serious real planning and even some writing on the next game already, and that’s a luxury – we’ve never been in that position before.”
O’Connor continues, “So [Bonnie Ross and I] know at a very high level what’s going to happen in, say, ten years from now — but at that very granular level knowing what’s going to happen in the next game, and that’s just been a great feeling for me.”
Bonnie Ross, 343’s studio head, said “You can look at the ending of Halo 4 and where Master Chief is, and obviously we had to know where we were going to take Halo 5 and Halo 6 with that. You have an epic sci-fi universe and we have multiple ways that we can go with this story, but all the pieces are laying there…”
It’s been said before that Halo has a 10 year plan by Frank O’Connor, which makes it odd that he claims that he’s “never been in that position before.” Assuming that everything goes according to plan, it certainly seems to be in line with Xbox boss Phil Spencer’s vision for Halo, in which he had previously stated that he sees the franchise lasting for at least another 20 years.
Halo 5: Guardians is slated to be released on October 27 for the Xbox One. Stay tuned for details!
I believe that games are an important form of entertainment, and that they can uplift and inspire millions of people around the world. I love JRPGs, and dabble in many other genres, especially MOBAs.
